Large jackpots attract millions of lottery lovers. Why are there so many?

Four jackpots reached $1 billion or more in 2023 alone. How do these large lottery jackpots happen, and why?

The Rise of Large Lottery Jackpots: What’s Behind the Trend?

  • Reason 1 – Changes to the game
  • Reason 2 – Interest rates and the lottery
  • Reason 3 – The bigger the jackpot the more people play

People love to dream of hitting it big and becoming the country’s next millionaire. The largest lottery jackpot ever won was $2.04 billion. Edwin Castro of Pasadena, CA, took home that prize. Changes to the game have created several very large lottery jackpots in the past decade. Interest rates also impact large jackpots in the lottery. Lastly, there is good old human psychology.

Changes to the Game

Big lottery jackpots, which once were uncommon, have since become more frequent. Let’s examine the changes in America’s two most popular games, Powerball and Mega Millions.

Powerball: Changes to the number of choices for both white balls and the red Powerball have impacted gameplay and the ease of matching all six numbers. In 2015, the number of white balls available increased from 59 to 69, and the number of red Powerball options decreased from 35 to 26. This change impacted the odds of winning a prize, especially the jackpot, and increased the odds for prizes at all levels. It impacted this NJ player who missed the jackpot by only one number!

Mega Millions: Similar to Powerball, Mega Millions reduced the number of options for white balls from 75 to 70 while increasing Mega Ball options from 15 to 25. This change affected the odds of winning the grand prize, shifting them from 1 in 259 million to 1 in 302 million. Additionally, Mega Millions also increased ticket prices from $1 to $2, and since the majority of each ticket sold goes into the prize pool, this resulted in higher jackpot prizes.

Rising Interest Rates

Are you surprised by the thought that interest rates have an impact on the lottery? It’s not a well-known fact. This is because the advertised jackpot for any game with a big lottery jackpot is based on annuity options or the amount you would make from the jackpot over a given period. If you select the annuity option to claim your big jackpot, you will receive 29 payments over 30 years.

How Players Impact Jackpot Sizes

Human psychology also has a role in large lottery jackpots. The higher the jackpot, the more people get in on the fun and hope to win. When the jackpot hits $1 billion, and the prizes are huge, people who don’t usually play the lottery, find themselves getting tickets. This creates a cycle that increases the jackpot even more. Since a portion of each ticket sold goes into the lottery prize pool, the more people that participate, the bigger the jackpot grows.

How Lotteries Create Larger Jackpots Over Time

We’re all familiar with Powerball and Mega Millions. Did you know that these games were originally something else?

When Mega Millions began, it was known as the Big Game. It was still a draw game, but the number of balls you had to pick from and the odds of winning a prize were very different. The Big Game debuted on August 31, 1996, with just six states participating. The game grew in popularity in 1997, and an additional drawing was added. In 1998, another state joined in the fun. In 2002, the name was changed to Mega Millions, and the game became what it is today with changes to the game matrix and prize amounts. Today, 47 jurisdictions participate, 45 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Powerball started in 1998 as Lotto America. In 1992, the idea of using two drums to draw numbers came to fruition, and Powerball was born. This use of two drums decreased the odds of winning a jackpot, created numerous prizes, and raised the overall odds of winning a prize.

The Power Play option was added in 2001, increasing the excitement of the game. In 2012, the game format changed with an increase in the basic ticket cost, a rise in the minimum jackpot prize, and a reduction in the number of Powerball options (from 39 to 35). In 2015, the format was changed again, this time reducing the Powerball options from 35 to 26 while increasing the number of white balls from 59 to 69. Powerball is now played in 48 U.S. jurisdictions.

The Role of Ticket Sales in Creating Big Lottery Jackpots

Each state decides how lottery ticket sales impact its economy. One thing that is the same between all states is that the majority of ticket sales go into the prize pool for each specific game. When you order tickets for Mega Millions or Powerball, research shows that approximately 60% of each lottery ticket sold goes towards funding the prize pools for that game.

This impacts the large lottery jackpots we see. The bigger the jackpot, the more people that play, and with about 60% of each ticket sale funding prizes, it’s no wonder the grand prize gets so big for the most popular lottery games.

What to Do After Winning a Large Jackpot

Are you wondering how to claim a large lottery jackpot? Each state has its own rules for claiming lottery winnings. If you find yourself a winner of a large lottery jackpot or other prize, visit your local lottery website for details about how to claim your prize.

One thing to consider is whether your state allows you to claim lottery winnings anonymously. Each state lottery has rules around this matter. Some states will require your name, the amount won, the game, and where the ticket was obtained to be public knowledge. Others will allow you to claim winnings via a trust, thereby protecting your identity. Still others will allow you to remain completely anonymous.

Regardless of how you choose to claim your big lottery winnings, it’s essential to have a plan in place if your prize is substantial. If your state allows you to claim through a trust, you will need a lawyer to create the trust for you. A Certified Public Accountant can help you with your tax situation and advise you on whether a lump sum or annuity is the best option. Additionally, a financial planner can help you develop a strategy to make sure your lottery winnings fund your life for years to come.
