It has been a very strange season for Travis Kelce. Through the first few weeks of the season, people were discussing the decline of Kelce and questioning how much he had left in the tank. It took him seven games to even score a touchdown this season. However, in the past three games, he has looked like old Travis Kelce again. The lack of wide receivers for the Chiefs was undoubtedly harming Kelce’s production. Since adding DeAndre Hopkins, Kelce’s numbers have exploded. In the three games with Hopkins on the field, Travis Kelce is averaging 10.7 catches and 84.7 yards per game with two receiving touchdowns.
In his last six games against the Bills, including the postseason, Kelce is averaging 7.7 receptions per game. In the most important games, Patrick Mahomes looks to Travis Kelce as his safety blanket. This is a really pivotal game for the Chiefs as a win would almost guarantee them the #1 seed in the AFC for the postseason. Both teams will likely be treating this as a pseudo-playoff game despite how early in the regular season it is.
The Bills defense has been solid this season but they have had a bend-don’t-break mentality. They are a respectable 12th in the league in defensive EPA/dropback but they are 20th in dropback success rate. The disparity there indicates that they are willing to give up small chunks of yardage on a down-to-down basis but won’t allow anything explosive. That fits the bill perfectly for Travis Kelce to have a lot of catches. The Bills will keep everything in front of them and force Mahomes to check it down to Kelce repeatedly. Kelce will also continue to be the go-to guy for Mahomes when he needs to pick up a first down. That will result in Kelce clearing his receptions prop of 6.5, a number he has cleared comfortably in four of his past five games.
