Both these teams hold playoff aspirations, so this game will play a major role in shaping the playoff picture. Cincinnati especially has little room for error following its 4-6 start.

The season outlook for Justin Herbert changed drastically after the first four games of the season. The Chargers leaned heavily on their rushing game and defense to produce results to start the year. Through the opening four games, Herbert threw 27 or fewer passes and did not record for more than 179 yards in a game. Things opened up in the Chargers offense after Week 4. Since this time, Herbert threw for 237 or more yards for the next four weeks and it was not until last week that he was held below 200 yards passing again.
Overall, Herbert is averaging 209.9 passing yards per game which is well below his career average of 269.2. The Oregon product has thrown for over 243.5 yards in just three games this season, although he has reached the number in three of the past four weeks. Herbert has thrown at least one touchdown in all but one game this season. However, he has only thrown for two passing touchdowns in three games this year.
While he will not be confused for a true dual-threat quarterback, Herbert has utilized his legs more in recent weeks. He has attempted at least one rushing attempt in every game and recorded as many as nine rushing attempts in a game this year. Herbert has tallied as many as 49 rushing yards in a game but is averaging just 13 rushing yards per game. He has only reached the end zone with his legs once this season, with this occurring last week against the Titans.
This is a favorable matchup for Herbert as the Bengals’ defense has struggled to produce this season. Cincinnati ranks 26th in points allowed and 23rd in yards given up. Their pass defense has been especially concerning, with the Bengals ranking 23rd in passing yards allowed and 25th in passing touchdowns given up.
Herbert has faced off with the Bengals just once so far in his career. While this was back in 2021 with a completely different coaching staff, the then second-year quarterback threw for 319 yards and three touchdowns leading the Chargers to a victory.
It feels as if the Chargers have settled into the Jim Harbaugh and Greg Roman offense with Herbert at the forefront of this. The 26-year-old has plenty of arm talent and is beginning to be given more freedom. The Bengals present a favorable matchup and Herbert has thrown for over 1.5 touchdowns in two of the last three weeks. Expect this trend to continue and for Herbert to keep moving in the right direction as the playoffs inch closer.
