Captain’s Picks

Joe Burrow ($15,900 CP): Can the NFL MVP miss the playoffs? Patrick Mahomes may lead the Chiefs to an undefeated record but Burrow has the MVP stats. This is NFL DFS. Wins don’t matter. Victory is defunctory. It’s meaningless at best and a hindrance at worst. Winning teams can play conservatively. They don’t play catch-up. The Bengals are always playing catch-up and they do so through pass and catch. Burrow averages 267 yards per game and 2.4 TDs.

UTIL Plays

Ja’Marr Chase ($12,000): It’s peanut butter jelly time. Peanut butter jelly time with a baseball bat. NFL DFS lineups cannot have Joe Burrow without Chase. They’re peanut butter and jelly. Two of the six slots in DraftKings NFL DFS lineups do not require much thought. Burrow works and his work goes through Chase. The Bengals’ star receiver has 981 yards and 10 TDs through 10 games.

J.K. Dobbins ($10,000): The culture has changed in Los Angeles. Jim Harbaugh will do that. He turned around the San Francisco 49ers and the Michigan Wolverines. The Chargers are 6-3 and on their way to the playoffs. Their balanced offense leans on their backfield offseason acquisition. Dobbins averages 4.8 yards per carry. The Bengals have allowed 4.2 YPC and 13 rushing touchdowns. Their defense has improved and isn’t a necessary target on main slates. This is a showdown slate. Defenses have to be ignored.

Mike Gesicki ($6,200): Joe Burrow throws touchdowns. All Bengals are live. There are cheaper options but they lack Gesicki’s volume. The Bengals’ new tight end is developing a rapport with Burrow. He has his QB’s trust. Gesicki has been targeted 23 times in the last three games. He scored 30 DKFP in Week 9 against the Raiders. The Chargers are average in terms of limiting fantasy points by tight ends.

Fades

Justin Herbert ($9,400): Always be bold with NFL DFS Showdown Slate fades. Herbert is much more than a game manager but it doesn’t feel that way in the Chargers’ new offense. The Bengals have allowed big fantasy games to opposing quarterbacks. The matchup is tempting but not as tempting as it appears. The Bengals have faced a plethora of dynamic quarterbacks. Most of their poor defensive performances were against dual-threat QBs. The pocket passer from L.A. should struggle with Lou Anarumo’s defensive scheme.

THE OUTCOME

The Bengals’ season is once again on life support. There is a path to a Wild Card spot but the path is patchy. They can no longer afford to throw games away. They need four solid quarters. The Chargers are safe. They take care of business. This is a matchup between desperation and determination. Take desperation.

Final Score: Bengals 34, Chargers 27
