Barkley is having a monster season for the Eagles. He is +300 to win Offensive Player of the Year at DraftKings Sportsbook, the second-best odds behind only Derrick Henry. Barkley has not only put up massive numbers himself but has expanded the Eagles’ offense as a whole. He has allowed Jalen Hurts to become a more efficient runner with the zone-read concepts they have implemented. His rushing threat has also scared defenses enough to open up deep shots downfield to A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith.
This is a very important matchup against Washington where both offenses should find joy. The Commanders have one of the best offenses in the league and will be able to move the ball against the Eagles. That being said, Washington’s defense has a lot of issues and Barkley should be able to break off some explosive runs. The Commanders’ defense is 27th in rush/EPA and 25th in rushing success rate. They have given up 10 runs of 20+ yards this season, the fifth-most of any team in the league.
Barkley has shown up when the Eagles have needed him the most this season. Their toughest games have been against the Packers, Falcons, Bengals and Saints (the Saints were 2-0 with the best offense in the NFL when they faced off). In those four games, Barkley has averaged 114.75 rushing yards per game. If you add his personal revenge game against the Giants where he ran for a season-high 176 yards, Barkley has risen to the occasion when his team needed him most.
Last week against the Cowboys, Barkley had his second-lowest rushing mark of the season with just 66 yards. However, he only had 14 carries and actually rested for most of the second half because of the Eagles’ large lead. That is good news for Barkley because he should be very fresh for this game, unlike most players on a short week. Meanwhile, the Commanders’ defense went to war, playing down to the final possession against the Steelers on Sunday. Barkley should be able to run over, past and through those defenders on Thursday night and rack up yardage, exceeding his rushing yards prop of 95.5.
