We have a 10-game NHL slate tonight and zero back-to-back scenarios to worry about. Considering that there is only one NBA game and one NFL game on television, there should be plenty of eyes on tonight’s NHL betting card. Maybe that’s just wishful thinking. Philadelphia Flyers at Ottawa Senators
Thomas Chabot Over 0.5 Assists (+125)
Chabot plays on the second line alongside Nick Jensen but still averages 23:07 time on ice per game, the 35th-highest mark in the NHL. His playmaking has been nothing short of impressive to start the season, notching an assist in eight of 15 games this season, and in seven of the last 10 games alone. This line feels like a steal at +125 odds and I hope it sounds even more enticing after I break down a unique statistic that could be the difference maker in Chabot cashing.
Chabot has totaled eight assists on the season but it isn’t because he’s turned into an elite passer that can fit the puck in tight windows. It’s because of the amount of rebound chances he creates with his shot attempts. Although he’s averaged just 2.7 shots per game in 15 games this season, he still averages 5.7 shot attempts. He also ranks second on the team in rebounds created (5) and first in rebounds created above expected (2.8). Lucky for us, Philadelphia is the perfect team for Chabot to exploit. It ranks second in rebound goals against (7) and has had 16.28% of its rebounds result in goals, good for 12th-worst in the league.
Nashville Predators at Edmonton Oilers
Steven Stamkos Over 2.5 Shots on Goal (-125)
Leon Draisaitl Over 2.5 Shots on Goal (-120)
Sometimes, you have to trust the hit rates, and that’s what I’m doing tonight with both Stamkos and Draisaitl in an expected high-scoring matchup. Edmonton surrenders the eighth-most shots per game to opposing right wingers (6.0) and Nashville surrenders the 12th-most shots per game to opposing centers (10.53).
The reason I’m trusting the hit rates is simply because Draisaitl loves playing against the Predators and Stamkos loves playing against the Oilers. I know, historical rates can be scuffed because of roster turnover every offseason but the numbers are jumping off the page and attacking me, so I have to trust it. Stamkos has cleared this line in 17-of-21 career games against the Oilers and all but one career road game. The same goes for Draisaitl, who has cleared this line in 11 of the last 13 games versus the Predators. Both have struggled recently to register shots on net but have still averaged well over four shot attempts per game across the last 10 games. The matchups are usually competitive and both stars will be looking to find the back of the net. A good, old-fashioned get-right spot, if you will.
