With Michael Pittman Jr. (back) inactive, Adonai Mitchell had the best game of his career this past Sunday vs. the Bills. The rookie caught all six of his targets for 71 yards, resulting in 13.1 FPTS. Mitchell saw a 17% target share and he ran a route on 95% of his team’s dropbacks, both of which are season-highs for the receiver. This is a very compelling role that Mitchell will likely maintain if Pittman remains sidelined this week, which is a possibility.
The veteran wasn’t able to log one practice last week and Pittman has been dealing with this back injury all season. In fact, there were rumblings a month ago that the wideout was headed to IR with the injury. Yes, Pittman has played multiple games since this report, but last week’s full absence from practice is a concerning sign.
Pittman will need to return to practice and show some positive signs in order to play this Sunday, and with this feeling like a tall order, Mitchell is worth perusing off the waiver wire this week, even with a subpar matchup vs. the Jets on the menu this Sunday.
That being said, Alec Pierce is the better option over Mitchell if both Colts receivers are available on waivers. Pierce ran the same amount of routes as Mitchell this past Sunday but saw a higher target share at 20%, including two red-zone targets, and finished with 18.1 FPTS. This season, Pierce is producing 0.21 FPTS per snap and a huge 22.4 YPR, while Mitchell is averaging 0.19 FPTS per snap and 11.7 YPR.
