The PGA TOUR heads to Bermuda this week for the Butterfield Bermuda Championship. Port Royal Golf Course will be the host, and measures as a 6,828-yard par 71 with Bermuda grass greens.
Yet again, the field is not particularly strong, but we will see former winners of this event in the form of Seamus Power and Brendon Todd teeing it up this week, along with PGA TOUR regulars Mackenzie Hughes, Lucas Glover and Ben Griffin.
Below I have outlined my two favorite bets for the week.
Rico Hoey to win (+4000)
Hoey has yet to win on the PGA TOUR, but I believe he’s not too far off from doing so, as he ranks No. 1 in this field in Total Strokes Gained over his past 48 rounds. He’s excelled in virtually every area in that time frame, sitting sixth in SG: Tee-to-Green, sixth in GIR%, ninth in SG: Ball-Striking, 30th in SG: Putting and maybe most importantly, No. 1 in birdies per round.
Hoey’s recent results have been stellar, as he’s posted four top-eight finishes across his past 11 starts, including a runner-up at the ISCO Championship and T3 at the Shriners Children’s Open. He finished T22 in his last start at the ZOZO, but closed with a 66 on Sunday, while gaining 1.3 strokes off-the-tee and 1.8 more on approach.
Hoey has never played this event before, but with nearly all of his recent success coming at birdie-fests, he should have no trouble carving up Port Royal. There are plenty of guys who are half of Hoey’s price who have also yet to win on the PGA TOUR, so I’ll gladly take my chances here at 40/1 that the Philippines native gets it done this week.
Kevin Yu to win (+4000)
A recent winner on the PGA TOUR, Yu took down the Sanderson Farms Championship last month. He then kept the good times rolling in Japan, posting a T12 at the ZOZO. Yu has been feast or famine basically all season, posting five top-10 finishes along with 11 missed cuts in his 25 starts.
What cannot be disputed is Yu’s ball-striking prowess, as the Chinese Taipei native ranks fifth in this field in that department over his past 48 rounds, along with sitting fifth in SG: Tee-to-Green in the same time frame. He also boasts very strong history in Bermuda, having finished T30 and T3 in his pair of starts at Port Royal.
Now that Yu got the monkey off his back and picked up his first win, we need to consider him a serious threat moving forward, especially when he’s sitting at 40/1 in a weak field like this.
