Captain’s Picks
Joe Mixon ($16,200 CP): Nico Collins ($10,000) is unlikely to suit up Sunday. That leaves Mixon as the Texans’ best offensive weapon. The Lions have a high-powered offense. The Texans must play keep away and sit on the ball. Mixon was already carrying an enormous volume. His 21 rush attempts per game lead the NFL. The winning strategy is to pound the ball 30 times. Some of those carries are bound to be in the red zone. Mixon has six touchdowns in six games to accompany his 609 rushing yards. Detroit has not allowed many yards on the ground (851 yards) but that is script-dependent. Teams are often forced to pass. When they do run, opponents average 4.8 yards per carry (27th).
UTIL Plays
Jared Goff ($9,600): Both quarterbacks are quality passers but only Goff has quality pass catchers. C.J. Stroud ($9,800) started the season with a smorgasbord of receivers. Now, his plate is empty. Goff, on the other hand, is juggling plates full of food in his hands. The Lions’ offense is a buffet. There are quality receivers, tight ends and pass-catching running backs. There might not be a chocolate fountain but his offensive line makes up for the absence of the middle-class delicacy.
Tank Dell ($8,800): If Dell can amass 126 receiving yards on six catches against Sauce Gardner and D.J. Reed, he should be able to produce against the Lions. Carlton Davis III is a solid cornerback but not a lights-out CB. The Lions’ 2024 first-round pick, Terrion Arnold, is playing well for a rookie but he’s just that. Life isn’t easy for a rookie cornerback in the NFL. Dell will do all he can to welcome the Detroit CB to the big league. The Texans are running short on weapons. They may not have air power, but they have ground power with a tank in Mixon and the Tank with Dell.
Kalif Raymond ($2,800): Just tell yourself this offense is good. Keep saying it. That’s the only way to swallow playing a secondary option in the Lions’ offense. Tim Patrick ($2,400) and Raymond are not appealing because they’re not productive. This isn’t a terrible price for a receiver who has a touchdown in two of the last three games and caught four passes for 73 yards four games ago. Jameson Williams was out but the volume has not been there for Patrick and Raymond. It’s a risky pick but value NFL Showdown Slate DFS picks are always volatile.
Fades
Jahmyr Gibbs ($9,200): As always, NFL Showdown Slate fades must be bold. No one needs to hear about fading a punt. Which star won’t shine under the spotlight of primetime football? The obvious pivot position is the Lions’ backfield. It’s a two-headed monster. Both can succeed but it is more likely one plays better. Due to salary constraints, only one fits in NFL DFS lineups. The popular option is to fade David Montgomery ($8,200) and chase Gibbs’ explosive upside. This is the rational option. Forget rationality, give me Montgomery. NFL DFS Showdown Slates are more about leverage than analysis. The player pool is small. It’s all about swerving when others don’t. This fade doesn’t require Gibbs to fail. It requires Montgomery to do just a little better. That will put Montgomery lineups ahead of most of the field.
THE OUTCOME
It’s a shame that the Texans are shorthanded. That’s life in the NFL. It’s not about being the best. The road to the Super Bowl is paved with pain. The teams that survive the grueling 18-week season are rewarded with two more months of football. It’s a bear. A bear that the Lions were built to bear.
