After being a grail for many sneakerheads over the last 25 years, one of the most legendary — and limited — collaborations of all-time is about to become available to the masses.
That’s right, the Wu-Tang Clan Nike Dunk finally gets a general release on Saturday for a retail price of $150.
The original Wu-Tang Dunk dropped 25 years ago in limited quantities and has long been a grail in the sneaker community. Nike notes that this new drop “mirrors the original, featuring ‘Killa Beez’ color blocking, premium leather and the hip-hop group’s distinctive W logo embroidered on the tongue label and outer heel” and that the Nike Wu-Tang Clan Dunk honors the history of the trendsetting hip-hop group and legendary streetwear silhouette.
“These Dunks are important to me and the Wu-Tang legacy because of the cultural impact they’ve had since their original release,” RZA said in a statement on Nike’s website. “For many years, the sneaker world was reserved for athletes and some entertainers, and Nike recognizing us in this way is a testament to hip-hop and our contribution to culture.”
Nodding to Wu-Tang’s legendary status and influence in New York, Nike teamed up with current members of the New York Knicks, including Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart, to help announce the arrival of perhaps one of the most important pairs of the legendary Nike Dunk ever to be released. Not that it really needs any more hype than it has, but this commercial definitely made some waves and got people’s attention.
The aforementioned black and yellow color blocking may be somewhat similar to the standard Iowa Dunks, and perhaps the yellow is a bit darker than it was on the OG 1999 pairs, but these new Wu-Tang Dunks will definitely stand out and turn some heads on the street and that classic W will still get a nod of respect. If you know, you know. The classic look is completed by a white midsole paired with a yellow outsole and matching yellow shoelaces. A yellow Wu-Tang “W” logo is also seen on the shoe’s black tongue.
The Nike Dunk may not be as hot a silhouette as it was a few years ago, but there is no doubt that this Wu-Tang edition will be an instant sellout. There has already been a drop on the Wu-Tang website, although it was somewhat mired by post-purchase cancellations. It will be interesting to see how many pairs will be available and what that could mean for the post-purchase aftermarket. The shoe is currently available on StockX with an average price of $331 on 1,321 sales.
