The Thunder and Rockets are two of the best teams in the Western Conference in the early going. OKC is young, deep, potent and has lost only once on the season. HOU is also young and deep but a smidge not as potent. They have lost three times on the season and there is definitely a tier break between the two clubs. Sengun is one of the most talented big men in the league. They call him the Turkish Jokic for a reason, and the Rockets just extended him for five years and $185 million after breaking out in his third season. He posted 21.1 points, 9.3 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 1.2 steals in 32.5 minutes per contest last year.
This season has not been as prolific. Sengun is averaging 16.4 points, 11.4 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 1.1 steals and 1.3 blocks in only 28.4 minutes per game.
Sengun played 26 minutes in the opener, 35 minutes the next game, 21 minutes in an overtime game, 33 minutes and 24 minutes on Wednesday. The Warriors game was matchup based, he was in foul trouble in the opener and the Rockets blew out the Spurs in the most recent contest.
But Ime Udoka has also preferred inserting a healthy Tari Eason into the lineup to play small ball and switch everything on defense. In addition, Sengun hasn’t been efficient offensively.
Well, on Friday, the Rockets play the Thunder, a team that has a unicorn in Chet Holmgren at center and can also play small. In addition, the Thunder are tops in defensive efficiency by a wide margin.
There’s a chance Sengun doesn’t see 30 minutes in this one. When he’s on the court, the Thunder defense will be swarming and making life difficult for him. Sengun has scored over 17 points just once this season.
