Cardinals fans and fantasy managers alike had a moment of panic in Week 9, when running back James Conner suffered a head injury right before halftime against the Bears. Although the eighth-year pro did return to action later in the game, Conner’s health scare raised an interesting question: which ‘other’ Arizona running back would take over if he missed any time?
Last Sunday gave us a bit of insight, but nothing definitive. Just two plays after Conner was hurt, it was Trey Benson that found the end zone on a one-yard run. The rookie enjoyed one of the best games of his young career, rushing the ball eight times for 37 yards and a touchdown to go with one catch for 18 yards.
However, it was fellow running back Emari Demercado who had the more productive day out of Arizona’s backfield. The second-year back had 80 yards from scrimmage on just six touches, one of which resulted in a 53-yard touchdown to end the first half.
While Demercado has been remarkably efficient in limited action this season (10.3 yards per attempt), Benson is still the more likely candidate to take control of the Cardinals’ run game. The Florida State product was just taken with a third-round pick in last year’s draft, so it’s clear the front office values him highly. Compared to former undrafted free agent Demercado, and it’s tough to see head coach Jonathan Gannon not riding with the rookie.
As of now, it’s difficult to justify rostering either player unless you’re a Conner owner looking for a capable handcuff. Still, with the veteran’s injury history, it makes sense to take a flier on one of the two if you have an empty roster spot. Going forward, this will certainly be a running back room for managers to monitor.
