The PGA TOUR heads to Mexico this week for the World Wide Technology Championship. El Camaleon at Diamante will be the host, and measures as a 7,452-yard par 72 with Paspalum greens.
The field is not particularly strong this week, but we will see the return of Cameron Young, who has not played since the TOUR Championship. Last year’s winner Erik Van Rooyen will also be teeing it up.
Below I have outlined my two favorite bets for the week.
J.J. Spaun to win (+2800)
Spaun is playing some of the best golf of his career of late, posting another top-10 finish at the ZOZO two weeks ago, where he would finish T6. The California native has now finished T26 or better in seven of his past 11 starts, including a T3 at the Wyndham Championship and T9 at the 3M Open.
During that stretch, Spaun ranks third in this field SG: Tee-to-Green, SG: Ball-Striking and Total Strokes Gained. He also sits 14th in driving accuracy and seventh in GIR% as well in that time frame, and is simply on massive heater right now.
He played this event last year, but did not do much more besides make the cut. However, he enters play in 2024 playing much better golf, and as a former PGA TOUR winner, I will gladly back him in this spot at 28/1, especially in a field like this.
Nico Echavarria to win (+5500)
Echavarria is coming off a win in his last start at the ZOZO, where he quite impressively held off a future Hall-of-Famer in Justin Thomas to claim the trophy. The Columbian put on a clinic with his irons in Japan, gaining eight strokes on approach, which led the field. Echavarria is also no stranger to the winner’s circle, as he had already won on the PGA TOUR back at the 2023 Puerto Rico Open.
It usually goes against the grain to bet a guy to win coming off a victory, but it’s clear that Echavarria is dialed in right now, and that he’s demonstrated plenty of success on resort-style courses in his career. In addition to his win in Puerto Rico two seasons ago, he finished T24 at the Mexico Open and T14 in Punta Cana, both earlier this year.
Echavarria is really hit or miss, as when he’s not posting high finishes he misses his fair share of cuts. However, he now has win and a T11 already this fall, and it appears something in his game is clicking right now. I like going right back to the well at this 55/1 number
