UPDATE: On Thursday, 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said he expects McCaffrey to make his season debut on Sunday.
McCaffrey ($8,000; Achilles) returned to practice Monday and is expected to make his season debut this Sunday vs. the Buccaneers. The 49ers have prioritized McCaffrey’s health by not rushing him back and all signs point to him seeing no limitations in his return.
Last season, McCaffrey finished as the second-best player in fantasy football with 26.1 FPTS per game. His role was incredible, with McCaffrey averaging 17 carries per game – including a league-high 63 redzone attempts – while logging 80% of the snaps. As a receiver, the back saw an 18.6% target share, including 16 redzone targets. Overall, McCaffrey ranked third among all skill players in FPTS per snap (0.51).
Jordan Mason ($7,400) has been the 49ers’ workhorse with McCaffrey sidelined this season, but the former is currently dealing with a shoulder injury. San Francisco tends to primarily only use one back in their offense and with Mason banged up, McCaffrey should slide right back into a huge role this Sunday of 15-20 touches, making him a surefire RB1 against a Tampa Bay defense that is giving up the fifth-most yards per rush this season (4.9). San Francisco is a 5.5-point favorite for this matchup on the DraftKings Sportsbook. For the last five occasions McCaffrey has competed as a favorite, he has been a monster with 29.4 FPTS per game.
McCaffrey is an obvious must-start if you have him in your season-long league and the back is also a terrific option for DFS at his reasonable $8,000 price tag. Last season, McCaffrey’s salary on DraftKings peaked at $9,500.
