Samaje Perine ($4,400)
At what point will a rusher emerge in the Kansas City backfield? The club signed Kareem Hunt last month, and the veteran has emerged as an inefficient bell cow. The Chiefs seem content with Hunt getting fed the rock over 20 times an outing despite his 3.7 yards per carry. At this point, it’s clear his job is to help bolster the lethal play-action attack and hold onto the ball, but this unproductive workload is unsustainable.
Samaje Perine has just two rushing attempts in his last three games, but he was on the field for 31% of the team’s snaps last week against Las Vegas. He’s been cast as the receiving back but hasn’t had a performance with over three touches since September 29. At some point, Andy Reid has to shake things up and give someone else an opportunity to elevate this middling ground attack.
Perine has a matchup with a Tampa Bay defense that allows points in droves. It’s the perfect spot for the 29-year-old to see a slight uptick in touches and try to make the reigning champs slightly more dynamic.
Trey Palmer ($4,000)
This entry might depend on Trey Palmer’s mood getting out of bed on Monday morning. When the second-year pro tweets about waking up angry, his stats seem to skyrocket in the subsequent game. Hey, if something works, there’s no reason to question it.
Palmer has been largely invisible this campaign, catching just seven passes for 90 yards. The speedster has only seen consistent playing time on special teams, failing to crack into the top four slots on the depth chart. With both Mike Evans and Chris Godwin sidelined, Palmer has the chance to finally get some targets. He’s a vertical threat who can burn defensive backs down the sideline.
With a gunslinger under center, taking the top off a defense is critical. Palmer has the wheels to get behind safeties with the chance to make splash plays. Expect him to be more involved at such a crucial juncture in the season.
