The World Series hasn’t even been over for 24 hours, and we already have Juan Soto’s odds for his next team. DraftKings Sportsbook released their odds on Thursday, and it’s not overly surprising. Let’s take a look at where Soto could be headed.
New York Yankees lead the way at -225
It would be shocking for the Yankees to let Soto go in free agency. In his first (and only, at least as of now) year as a Yankee, Soto slashed .288/.419/.569 with 41 home runs, 109 RBI, and 128 runs scored. Soto new career highs in home runs and runs scored, as well as posting an 8.1 WAR. Then, through 14 playoff games, Soto slashed /.286/.374/.714 with four home runs, nine RBI, and 12 runs scored.
Many teams won’t have the payroll flexibility to sign Soto, which makes his market quite small. Don’t forget, Soto has turned down a monster contract in the past. He declined a 15-year, $440 million dollar offer to remain with the Washington Nationals. At the time it seemed unthinkable! However, Soto has done nothing but up his value even further.
New York Mets are next at +380
The chances of Soto staying in New York are high, it just depends on which team we’re talking about.
A year after blowing up their team at the trade deadline, the Mets found themselves in the National League Championship Series. This was in large part due to their 17-9 record in September, propelling their spot in the National League Wild Card. Could their unexpected success send owner Steve Cohen back on a massive spending spree?
When asked about his thoughts during the offseason, Soto said the following per SNY: “I don’t know what’s the teams that are going to come after me. Definitely, I’ll be open to this and every single team. I don’t have any doors closed. I”m gonna be available for all 30 teams.”
The Mets could potentially be losing one of their cornerstone players, Pete Alonso, who is set to be one of the most sought-after free agents this offseason. Replacing Alonso won’t be easy, but Soto is most certainly one of the men to do it. The Mets are in a great position, payroll-wise, to be aggressive this offseason. They currently project to have about $150 million tied up, which is about half of where they were at in the season prior.
