The thing about a week-to-week status is that it’s very vague. However, on Wednesday, we did receive a pretty positive update on DK Metcalf (knee) heading into Week 9’s matchup with the Rams. While the wideout did not practice, head coach Mike Macdonald did state that he’s optimistic that Metcalf will be able to suit up this Sunday.
If that is indeed the case, Metcalf, who entered Week 8 leading all Seahawks WRs in targets (61) and receiving yards (568), would slot back in as the No. 1 weapon in this Seattle passing attack. But would there be enough left over for Smith-Njigba? After all, the former first-round pick did let fantasy owners down last weekend in what seemed like a fantastic spot.
I wouldn’t worry too much about JSN. Heck, I think you could also say that Tyler Lockett has FLEX consideration. The fact of the matter is that this Seahawks passing game has been able to sustain three wideouts all season long. In fact, through seven weeks, all three Seattle wideouts ranked inside the top 25 in wide receiver targets. In a very much related note, the Seahawks currently own the NFL’s highest pass ratio (66.3%). Geno Smith has 30 more drop backs than any other QB in the league. Trust me when I say, volume is not an issue.
Neither is matchup. While the Rams’ secondary has been slightly better in recent weeks as its gotten healthier, Los Angeles is still conceding 7.5 yards per opponent passing attempt — the sixth-worst mark in football.
Obviously, Smith-Njigba’s fantasy ceiling would be at its highest if Metcalf is forced to sit out another week, but don’t immediately discount the sophomore stud if his teammate plays in Week 9. Smith-Njigba could even been a very valuable GPP asset is Metcalf is back in the mix and stealing all the attention.
