Jameis Winston is officially the new signal-caller in Cleveland. The Browns confirmed Monday that starter Deshaun Watson ruptured his right Achilles in Sunday’s blowout loss against the rival Bengals. Second-year pro Dorian Thompson-Robinson took the reigns once Watson went down, but it’ll be the veteran Jameis Winston getting the nod against Baltimore this weekend.
Cleveland’s offense has been a disaster—last in the league in total yards and 29th in passing yards per game. Watson was at the forefront of this ineptitude—a shell of the slinger he was during his early years in Houston.
Winston will raise the floor of a unit that sorely needs a spark. His aggressiveness in pushing the ball downfield will help give the wideouts a better opportunity to make plays. His unwavering confidence in his arm will make it difficult to defend in a league with plenty of systematic robots from the pocket.
The likes of Jerry Jeudy and David Njoku will see an uptick in targets because even if they don’t garner great separation, Winston will feed them the rock. Until further notice, both are bench options until they prove they can produce. In deeper leagues, however, both are much more enticing, with Winston under center.
