There were some wild games in Week 8 of college football. Here are my updated national power rankings heading into Week 9.
I will do a top-25 college football power rankings every week for the duration of the regular season. These power rankings will be based on where every team stands at the current moment, not a prediction of where these teams will be at the end of the season. The team’s ranking from the week prior will be in parenthesis next to its current ranking.
#1- Oregon (2)
Oregon has the best signature win (Ohio State) of all of the undefeated teams in college football so it is only right to put it at No. 1.
#2- Georgia (3)
Georgia is still the best team in college football for my money and it proved it by beating No. 1 Texas on the road last week.
#3- Penn State (4)
Penn State remains undefeated with a big matchup against Wisconsin on the horizon.
#4- Miami (5)
Miami took down Louisville in another crazy offensive shootout. The Hurricanes are undefeated but they are flirting with disaster every week.
#5- Ohio State (6)
Ohio State lost a very close game to Oregon on the road but it is still a real National Championship threat.
#6- Texas (1)
Texas finally dropped its first game of the season. It needs to show composure this weekend in a road game against Vanderbilt and take care of business.
#7- Clemson (7)
Clemson is quietly rolling through the ACC. It is now favorites to win the conference and will likely make the playoff if it wins out.
#8- Tennessee (10)
The Volunteers picked up a pivotal win over Alabama to push their rivals to the brink of playoff elimination and keep their season alive.
#9- LSU (9)
LSU just keeps picking up important wins in SEC play. The Tigers have one of their toughest tests of the season as they head to Texas A&M this weekend.
#10- Iowa State (11)
Iowa State pulled off a dramatic comeback to take down UCF on Saturday. The Cyclones are in the driver’s seat to win the Big 12.
#11- Indiana (13)
Indiana faced its toughest test of the season so far against Nebraska and blew the ‘Huskers out. However, the Hoosiers need to survive without their QB Kurtis Rourke, who is set to miss at least a week.
#12- Alabama (8)
The Crimson Tide had their second loss of the season and need to be perfect the rest of the way if they want to make the College Football Playoff.
#13- Notre Dame (12)
Notre Dame keeps winning but it has a huge matchup against Navy on a neutral field this weekend.
#14- BYU (15)
BYU is the only other undefeated Big 12 team alongside Iowa State. The Cougars have back-to-back tough road tests ahead against UCF and Utah.
#15- Ole Miss (14)
Ole Miss also sits at two losses and needs to be perfect the rest of the season to have any chance at the College Football Playoff.
#16- Texas A&M (18)
Texas A&M is flying under the radar as a real contender in the SEC, but it faces a massive test in the form of LSU this weekend.
#17- Boise State (16)
Boise State continues to be the top Group of Five team in the country, but the Broncos face their biggest conference test of the regular season against UNLV this weekend.
#18- Kansas State (17)
Kansas State is hanging around in the Big 12 race. If the Wildcats win out, they will make the conference championship game.
#19- SMU (19)
SMU and Duke play an elimination game in the ACC title race this weekend and if SMU wins, it has a chance to hang around and steal a spot in the conference championship game.
#20- Illinois (22)
The Fighting Illini picked up a huge win over Michigan to assert themselves in the top 25. They have a chance to pull off a massive upset against No. 1 Oregon this weekend.
#21- Pittsburgh (24)
Pittsburgh is the final team hanging around in the ACC race. It takes on Syracuse in a tough ACC matchup on Thursday night.
#22- Navy (23)
Navy is having a fantastic season and it could take it to the next level with a win over Notre Dame this weekend.
#23- Vanderbilt (25)
Vanderbilt remains in the top 25 and it has a chance to jump up even further this weekend as it faces Texas at home.
#24- Army (NR)
Army joins Navy in the power rankings this week. Army picked up another good win over ECU and now enters its bye week.
#25- Missouri (20)
Missouri is a one-loss SEC team but it is hanging on for dear life in the power rankings because its performances are getting worse every week. It faces Alabama in a huge game this weekend.
