Many things went wrong for the Buccaneers on Monday. Not only did they got blown out by the Ravens on their home field, they lost both Chris Godwin (ankle) and Mike Evans ($7,300; hamstring) to injuries. Godwin is unfortunately done for the season due to his dislocated ankle and Evans is expected to miss at least three games, per Tampa Bay Times’ Rick Stroud.
Returning to his old role of primarily being a slot receiver, Godwin was having an excellent season and he was leading the Buccaneers with a career-high 26.6% target share before getting injured. As for Evans, he ranks second only to Godwin in target share for Tampa Bay at 19.3%. With both Godwin and Evans out of the picture, there is plenty of usage up for grabs.
With Godwin playing essentially the whole game, but Evans missing more than half of the contest, Palmer ($3,500) and McMillan ($3,700) both saw the biggest increases in usage in Week 7. Palmer saw three targets and ran a route on 81% of his team’s dropbacks, while McMillan racked up eight targets and ran a route on 60% of his team’s dropbacks.
Both players are going see near full-time roles going forward with Tampa Bay all the sudden extremely thin on receivers and are viable adds, but if forced to choice between the two, McMillan has the better upside.
As we saw Monday, the third-round pick is a more dominating presence than Palmer and McMillan’s target share should be larger going forward. In the loss to the Ravens, McMillan saw a target on a team-high 26% of his routes, while Palmer only garnered a target on 7% of his routes. Plus, McMillan’s downfield ability is another reason that he has a better ceiling than Palmer. In their limited playing time this season, McMillan has already seen five targets over 20 yards and he owns a 13.7 aDOT, while Palmer has only seen one target over 20 yards with a 9.6 aDOT.
Again, both McMillan and Palmer are strong adds this week, but McMillan is the player we should prioritize off the waiver wire in this situation.
Facing the Falcons this Sunday, the Buccaneers are 2.5-point underdogs on the DraftKings Sportsbook.
