Minnesota opens the 2024-25 in Los Angeles to face the Lakers, and there is tons of optimism in Timberwolves land after the 56-26 finish last season and trip to the Conference Finals. But Karl-Anthony Towns was traded to New York and Julius Randle replaced him over the offseason. That could allow Naz Reid to have a more significant role.
Reid won the Sixth Man of the Year award last season, averaging 13.5 points, 5.2 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 0.8 steals and 0.9 blocks in only 24.2 minutes per game. There’s a chance he gets closer to 30 minutes a contest this season.

While Reid does contribute a little something something in all categories sans assists, I’m going to focus on points, because Reid is primarily out there to space the floor and make it rain from downtown.

In four games against the Lakers last season, Reid scored nine, 21, 25 and 31 points in 21, 27, 42 and 35 minutes respectively. He’s not going to play mid-30s or 40 minutes, but I think he receives way more than 21, with somewhere close to 30 being viable. There is some uncertainty to the playing time but I have no doubt that he’s going to huck and chuck when he’s out there.
With defenses having to focus on Anthony Edwards and Rudy Gobert in the dunker’s spot, that should allow plenty of clean looks. Even if he replaces Gobert, the gravity of Edwards or the shooting prowess of newly acquired Donte DiVincenzo should keep attention away from him.
The Lakers were fourth in offensive pace last season and I expect them to be among the league leaders once again, so the environment should be a good one for Reid. In addition, the Lakers allowed the ninth-most three-point attempts last season and allowed the ninth-highest percentage from downtown.
