In Week 7’s edition of Sunday Night Football, the Jets will take on the Steelers as two-point underdogs, with the over/under set at 39 points. While both teams are known for their heavy-hitting defenses, I like Davante Adams’ chances of reaching the end zone in his New York debut.
From Hasson Reddick’s never-ending holdout to Robert Saleh’s midseason firing, Gang Green might be the NFL’s most fascinating franchise. On Tuesday morning, they generated another massive headline.
Hours after a sloppy 23-20 loss to the Bills, New York’s front office pulled the trigger on a much-anticipated trade with the Raiders for Adams. The move reunites Aaron Rodgers with his former Packers teammate, where the duo became one of the NFL’s premier quarterback-wide receiver tandems. The hope is that the eleven-year veteran can bring some much-needed cohesion to a sputtering offense (22nd in total yards per game).
As we’ve seen with Allen Lazard’s five touchdowns this season, Rodgers will get the ball to ‘his guys,’ especially in the end zone. There’s nobody the 40-year-old loves throwing to more than Adams, as the pair have linked up for 69 TDs since 2014. Why not one more?
Normally, the Jets would be content to feed Breece Hall and the running game. However, they might not have that luxury against Pittsburgh, who are only allowing 85.5 rushing yards per game (fourth-lowest in the NFL). The Steelers’ pass defense isn’t as dominant, as they have surrendered 7.1 yards per attempt (15th-most in the NFL). In a pick your poison scenario, New York will take its chances against a middle-of-the-road secondary.
It’s hard to imagine T.J. Watt and company surrendering chunk plays on the ground. Whether they find themselves ahead or trailing, the Jets will likely have to throw the ball. Considering the tumultuous past few weeks New York has had, expect Rodgers to give his favorite target the ball early and often. Bet on an Adams anytime touchdown at +180.
