McConkey suffered a hip injury likely during Wednesday’s practice, as he was listed as “limited” during Thursday’s session. There’s been no mention of how the injury occured or the severity of it. With the Week 7 game on Monday night, McConkey does get an extra day to rest. I am working under the assumption that he’s playing on Monday.
On the season, McConkey leads the Chargers with 32 targets, good for a 28.8% share. Quentin Johnson is second with 22 targets. Despite 10 more targets, Johnson has scored only 4.1 fewer FPTS than McConkey, as he’s scored three touchdowns compared to two for McConkey.
The matchup on Monday night is a juicy one, as the Cardinals have allowed the second-highest Pass EPA and have been most generous in terms of success rate by a wide margin. Unfortunately, the Cardinals have been leaky in run defense too, and the Chargers will ground-and-pound until the clock says 0, if they have their way.
The Chargers are 30th in pass rate and Herbert has one game this season with 18 pass attempts. That said, he’s thrown 20, 26, 27 and 34 passes in the other four games, so there will be opportunities for McConkey, and those should be juicy.
The fewest targets McConkey has seen in a game is four. He garnered seven, six, seven and eight in the other contests. He also has four red zone looks on the season.
Most of McConkey’s routes and catches have been in the 10 to 20 yard area. He does have four targets over 20 yards, with one at 40 yards. With 4.39 40 speed, he has the juice to take one to the house.
The likelihood of a ceiling game is low with McConkey, but the floor is relatively high and this matchup could be the one in which he does hit the upper range of outcomes.
