When Aaron Rodgers took his talents to New York last year, the screams of joy traveled from the subway vents on the sidewalks of NYC to the windows of one skyscraper to another. But then he suffered an Achilles injury on the first series and the season went kaput.
The optimism popped up like a prairie dog from a burrow prior to the start of this season, as Rodgers was a year removed from the injury, but there have been no rainbows and unicorns. Only a fired head coach and four losses in six games.
But at least Rodgers is still trotting out there every week, and the team just traded for wide receiver Davante Adams, which should help improve upon the -18.7 Total EPA, 11th-worst mark in the league. In addition, with a new play caller, the Jets utilized more pre-snap motion in Week 6.
That said, the game environment against the Steelers does not portend for many points, as the total is only 38.5 and the Steelers have the 31st pass rate.
There are slivers of hope, though. The path of least resistance against Pittsburgh is through the air, as the pass defense is middle-of-the-pack, even in the red zone. It’s the run defense that is elite. In addition, New York is third in pass rate.
If the Jets are going to get anything done on offense, it will likely be through the air and I could see two touchdowns being thrown by Rodgers. I’m definitely starting him over Deshaun Watson, but I’d probably start everyone over Watson right now.
