If Dionate Johnson sits in Week 7, is Xavier Legette worth starting?

Updated:

Diontae Johnson ($6,600; ankle) played through a questionable tag last week, but prior to that game, he was able to get limited practice sessions in for both Wednesday and Thursday. This week, Johnson has yet to practice as of Thursday, putting the receiver in serious jeopardy of missing his first game of the season.

Johnson has been the Panthers’ primary pass catcher this season, leading his team with a 27.2% target share and seeing 10 red zone targets, which is tied for the second-most in the NFL. Clearly, there will be a huge void to fill if Johnson is sidelined and Xavier Legette ($5,100) would be the primary beneficiary in that situation.

Legette has seen a target on 18% of his routes this season — which ranks second only to Johnson for Carolina — and that number would skyrocket if the latter was missing from the equation. Furthermore, Legette would likely run a route on nearly all of his team’s drop backs.

The rookie leads the Panthers with a 12.2-yard aDOT and he is producing a solid 0.22 FPTS per snap this season. Legette went off for 19.6 FPTS vs. the Bengals in Week 4, thanks to a career-high 10 targets, which is the type of volume he would likely see if Johnson was sidelined.

Plus, Legette’s matchup is great vs. the Commanders. They are giving up the fifth-most yards per pass (7.5) and this game’s total is the highest of Week 7 on the DraftKings Sportsbook at 51.5 points.

Legette would bring excellent upside in this spot if Johnson is out and the rookie would be a compelling start for both DFS and season-long formats.
