If De’Von Achane plays in Week 7, is he still a must-start?

De’Von Achane ($6,700) suffered a concussion in the Dolphins’ final game before their bye in Week 6, but the back is trending towards being available for Week 7, with Achane spotted at Miami’s practice Wednesday without a non-contact jersey.

This is a strong sign that the back has cleared concussion protocol and will be ready for this Sunday’s matchup with the Colts. However, Achane has struggled mightily and is by no means a must-start.

The back looked like a stud to begin the season, scoring at least 22 FPTS in his first two starts, but then fell off a cliff, recording single-digit FPTS in his next three. The primary reason for Achane’s decline is a direct result of Miami’s offense struggling with Tua Tagovailoa (concussion) inactive. The quarterback has no timetable for a return and Achane is a difficult start with Tagovailoa sidelined.

After ranking 10th in FPTS per snap among running backs for the first two weeks of the season at 0.44, Achane has ranked 50th in the category in these last three games sans Tagovailoa (0.17). Achane is averaging 1.2 yards per carry less with Tagovailoa inactive and Achane’s usage in the passing game has declined rapidly without the quarterback. Achane’s target share dropped from 19.8% with Tagovailoa active to a modest 10.8% with the QB inactive.

The Colts and their zone heavy defensive game plan make them a great matchup to attack through the air and it is more likely we see Tyreek Hill ($7,300) or Jayden Waddle ($5,300) get back on track in this spot than Achane, especially with Raheem Mostert ($6,100) also healthy again and back in the mix at running back.

Achane can be started as a FLEX play this week if you are desperate, but you more than likely have better options to consider on your bench.

On the DraftKings Sportsbook, the Dolphins are three-point underdogs vs. the Colts.
