There were some crazy games in college football over the weekend. Here are my updated national power rankings heading into Week 8.
I will do a top-25 college football power rankings every week for the duration of the regular season. These power rankings will be based on where every team stands at the current moment, not a prediction of where these teams will be at the end of the season. The team’s ranking from the week prior will be in parenthesis next to its current ranking.
#1- Texas (1)
Texas has looked like the best team in the country all season. However, it faces its biggest test of the year when Georgia comes to town this weekend.
#2- Oregon (6)
Oregon picked up a massive win over Ohio State. It is now almost guaranteed a playoff spot and a spot in the Big Ten Championship Game.
#3- Georgia (3)
This year’s Georgia team hasn’t looked as dominant as past Georgia teams but it still has the talent to win it all. The Bulldogs get their chance to prove it this weekend as they take on the No. 1 team in the country.
#4- Penn State (4)
Penn State picked up a solid road win over USC to remain undefeated. The Nittany Lions have a real path to the College Football Playoff and control their own destiny to the Big Ten Championship as well.
#5- Miami (5)
Miami has one of its toughest games of the season on the road against Louisville this weekend. It has needed late comebacks in its last two games to remain undefeated.
#6- Ohio State (2)
Ohio State lost to Oregon but it’s hard to drop it too far for losing by one point on the road to a top-five team. It should still make the College Football Playoff and have a chance to contend for a title.
#7- Clemson (8)
Since its opening loss to Georgia, Clemson has looked like one of the best teams in the country. It continues to dominate its ACC competition and is now favorites to win the conference.
#8- Alabama (7)
The Crimson Tide held on against Georgia a couple of weeks ago but have looked bad in two games since. They lost to Vanderbilt and were fortunate to hang on for a victory at home against South Carolina. Alabama travels to Tennessee this weekend in a game it needs to win.
#9- LSU (14)
LSU picked up a massive win over Ole Miss on Saturday. It has played many close games, but since its opening loss to USC, it has found ways to win.
#10- Tennessee (10)
Tennessee beat Florida in overtime on Saturday. It has been a string of ugly wins for Tennessee and this weekend it takes on Alabama in a pivotal conference game.
#11- Iowa State (11)
Iowa State is flying under the radar but it picked up another good win over West Virginia last weekend. The Cyclones have a very clear path to the Big 12 Championship Game if they can keep playing good football.
#12- Notre Dame (12)
Notre Dame looked like it was out of the playoff discussion after losing to Northern Illinois but it has looked good since that loss while other teams across the country keep losing.
#13- Indiana (13)
The Hoosiers are undefeated heading into a Week 8 matchup with Nebraska. This is a huge game in which the Hoosiers can prove they are the real deal.
#14- Ole Miss (9)
Ole Miss now has two losses after falling to LSU and likely needs to win out if it wants to make the College Football Playoff.
#15- BYU (15)
BYU is the only undefeated team in the Big 12 besides Iowa State. The Cougars have an important matchup with Oklahoma State this weekend in what could be a tricky game.
#16- Boise State (16)
Boise State continues to look like the best team at the Group of Five level led by Ashton Jeanty. It has a bye week this week but then plays the Group of Five game of the year against UNLV the following week.
#17- Kansas State (18)
With just one loss, Kansas State is very much in the Big 12 title fight. It picked up a pivotal win against Colorado over the weekend.
#18- Texas A&M (19)
Since losing its opener to Notre Dame, Texas A&M is undefeated and playing well. The Aggies have a pretty reasonable schedule the rest of the way and if they can beat LSU at home, they have a real chance to make the CFP.
#19- SMU (20)
SMU is another team that was somewhat written off after losing an early season game, but it has gotten back on track and are real contenders in the ACC.
#20- Missouri (21)
Missouri has been disappointing this season but with one loss, it is still in College Football Playoff contention.
#21- Nebraska (22)
Nebraska has a massive game against Indiana with its season on the line this weekend.
#22- Illinois (23)
Illinois held on in a crazy game against Purdue over the weekend and has another huge game against Michigan this weekend.
#23- Navy (24)
Navy is undefeated and looks like one of the best Navy teams in a very long time. It has an easy matchup this weekend against Charlotte before a huge game against Notre Dame the following week.
#24- Pittsburgh (25)
Pittsburgh is one of the surprise teams of the season as it sits at 6-0 heading into this week. The Panthers still have some tough conference games down the stretch but they have been really impressive so far.
#25- Vanderbilt (NR)
Vanderbilt proved that its win over Alabama wasn’t a fluke as it followed it up with an outright SEC win over Kentucky. This team is firing on all cylinders at the moment and is a team no SEC opponent wants to face.
