Is Darius Slayton a must-start if Malik Nabers sits in Week 6?

Updated:

By: Zach Thompson

The Giants got crushed in Week 1 against the Vikings, but they have been very competitive since then. In Week 2, they lost a close game to the Commanders because they didn’t have a kicker, and their other loss was a five-point Thursday Night Football game against the Cowboys. Their two wins have both come as road underdogs agains the Browns and Seahawks. Last week’s win in Seattle was especially impressive since they were without starting running back Devin Singletary and standout rookie receiver Malik Nabers. In Nabers’ absence, it was Darius Slayton who came up huge, and if Nabers misses another week, Slayton would be an outstanding play against the Bengals in Week 6.

Nabers is “doing better” this week according to coach Brian Daboll, but he is still in the concussion protocol and has yet to return to the main practice with the team.

Before Nabers’ injury, Slayton had been working as the team’s second receiver, playing over 70% of snaps and getting about four targets a game. With Nabers out in Week 5, he played 90% of snaps and caught 8-of-11 targets for 122 yards and a touchdown.

While Wan’Dale Robinson also had a score and a few more targets with Nabers out, it was Slayton that picked up most of his work on the outside.

The Giants aren’t on the main DFS slate this week and are 3.5-point home underdogs to the Bengals. Cincinnati has been an excellent matchup for opposing wide receivers this season, which would help make Slayton a must-start this week if Nabers is out. The Bengals have allowed five wide receiver touchdowns in the last four weeks while giving up an average of 172.5 receiving yards to the position.

Follow the news the rest of the week to see if Nabers is able to return, but if not, Slayton will be set for a starring role in primetime in Week 6.
