In the Chiefsโ first full game without Rashee Rice (knee), JuJu Smith-Schuster came alive on Monday Night Football. In the win over the Saints, the 27-year-old hauled in seven of his eight targets for 130 yards (23 FPTS), which is the first time Smith-Schuster has exceeded 100 yards receiving since Week 7 of the 2022 season. Impressively, the veteran was targeted on a team-best 28% of his routes in the victory.
After being waived by the Patriots right before the start of the season, the Chiefs quickly signed Smith-Schuster, reuniting him with a Chiefsโ team that he won the Super Bowl with two years ago. Now, after playing a minimal role to begin the season, Smith-Schuster will likely operate as Kansas Cityโs No. 2 receiver going forward with Rice reportedly out for the season.
Smith-Schuster ran a route on a season-high 64% of his teamโs drop backs in Week 5 and that rate will likely increase after how productive he was with the role. Fighting for targets with Travis Kelce and Xavier Worthy, expectations do need to be tempered for Smith-Schuster after his breakout in Week 5. Still, being Patrick Mahomesโ No. 3 receiving option is a very valuable role and Smith-Schuster needs to be rostered in all season-long leagues.
