Derek Carr started the season leading the Saints offense to 15 straight scoring drives and a dazzling 2-0 record. Since then, the offense has stagnated, and New Orleans has dropped three in a row. The reeling franchise must now navigate a critical juncture of the season without their starting quarterback.
NFL Network reporters Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo reported that the 33-year-old signal-caller will miss multiple weeks after suffering an oblique injury. Former Fresno State standout Jake Haener and preseason star Spencer Rattler are options to start in Carr’s absence.

Chris Olave is a clear winner in this scenario, as he’s likely due for an uptick in opportunities. He’s somehow second on the team in targets, a development so puzzling his brother tweeted (do we still call it that?) about Olave’s lack of looks during Monday Night Football. Young quarterbacks tend to force-feed their top pass catchers, and the tape shows Olave is open — he’s just not getting the ball.
Rashid Shaheed has surpassed his teammate on the outside in almost every meaningful receiving stat, but his skill set may lead to a dip in production. Shaheed is primarily a vertical threat who can burn opposing secondaries over the top. Whether Haener or Rattler is under center, their inexperience will require offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak to condense his scheme. Both options flexed their ability to sling the rock downfield in college but will likely opt to be more conservative in their starting debuts.
Shrinking the playbook should benefit Alvin Kamara, as screen passes and other quick hitters are prevalent options in these scenarios. Security blankets on quick dump-offs also get a boost, so Foster Moreau and Juwan Johnson should anticipate work, particularly near the end zone against tighter coverage.
Even with uncertainty at the game’s most important position, the Saints are just +3.5 in their upcoming divisional matchup with the Buccaneers.
