The PGA TOUR heads to Utah for the first ever Black Desert Championship. Black Desert Resort will host and measures as a 7,371-yard par 71 with Bentgrass greens. The field is weaker than what we normally see during the regular season, but nonetheless, there are plenty of talented players teeing it up.
Below I have outlined my two favorite bets for the week.
Patrick Fishburn to win (+3000)
Fishburn will feel right at home this week in Utah, having grown up in the state and playing his college golf at BYU. The 31-year old has been on an absolute tear since the end of the spring, posting seven top-25s since the Myrtle Beach Classic back in early May. He’s also finished T6 or better in three of his past five starts, including a pair of third-place finishes at the Procore and Barracuda Championships.
To further illustrate how dominant Fishburn has been, he ranks No. 1 in this field in Total Strokes Gained over the past 36 and 24 rounds, while sitting second in SG: Off-the-Tee and fourth in SG: Putting over the latter time frame. Fishburn can hit the ball a mile, which should help him shred the par-5s at Black Desert Resort this week.
With the way he’s been trending, backing Fishburn at 30/1 in his home state this week is one of the more enticing plays on the board.
David Skinns to win (+8000)
Skinns is extremely hit or miss, but when he hits he has a insanely high ceiling. The Englishman has missed 10 cuts in his 21 starts so far in 2024, but in the 11 events where he made the weekend, he’s finished T24 or better six times, including a T7 and T4 at both the Texas Children’s Houston Open and Cognizant Classic.
Just last week he opened the Sanderson Farms Championship by shooting a 12-under round of 60, which obviously led the field. A poor third round torpedoed any chances of contending, but you can clearly see the upside when Skinns is on his game.
Skinns does most of his damage with irons in hand, as he ranks fifth in this field in SG: Approach and sixth in GIR% over his past 36 rounds. If he could simply avoid the one blow-up round, there’s a better than decent chance he could be in contention come Sunday evening. Despite never winning on the PGA TOUR, Skinns does have three victories on the Korn Ferry Tour, with his most recent coming last year.
This field is as weak as we’ll see all year, making this 80/1 number on Skinns extremely viable when rounding out your card.
