The running back position has lost so much fantasy luster that fantasy managers blindly flock to get their hands on any backup ball carrier in hopes they can produce. That strategy has a hit rate lower than anyone cares to admit. For every Jordan Mason and Zach Charbonnet, there’s an Antonio Gibson or Alexander Mattison. By all accounts, Ty Chandler fits in with the latter group.
Aaron Jones took his talents to Minnesota to be the bellcow of the most surprising 5-0 team in recent memory. The 29-year-old exited the Vikings’ most recent contest against the Jets after re-aggravating a hip injury. Even with an impending bye week, his advanced age in the demanding position could limit him for the near future. That could open the door for Chandler to see an uptick in touches, but I don’t see that translating to fantasy.
On 42 carries in the young season, the third-year pro has managed a pitiful 3.5 yards per carry. On 16 touches in London, Chandler managed just 39 yards, indicative of his squad’s worst offensive output of the campaign. He has been a reliable runner, never losing a fumble in 150 career attempts, but his inefficiency limits his snap count. His 4.3 speed can be utilized more in the passing game as an outlet for Sam Darnold, but he’s never shown spectacular receiving prowess.
Even with Jones healthy, Minnesota is aggressive on 3rd and short, trusting their weapons on the outside. That philosophy carries over to the red zone, as the veteran has only punched in one score in five contests. With Jordan Addison back, this unit likely leans further into their aerial attack, limiting any potential work for Chandler.
There’s a depth chart for a reason: stop blindly expecting every backup to replicate starter numbers. Avoid all the buzz and fade Chandler on waivers in the next few weeks.
