There was plenty of hype surrounding number one overall pick Caleb Williams heading into the season. The Bears’ franchise centerpiece was labeled as one of the most NFL-ready rookies in recent history and penciled in as the top pick for well over a year.
However, Williams got off to a rocky start to his NFL career. The USC product completed just 48.3% of his passes in his debut game for only 93 passing yards and without scoring a touchdown. He struggled once again in Week 2, throwing for just 174 passing yards and adding a pair of interceptions.
While the skeptics were quick to come out of the woodwork, Williams has made some notable leaps forward since this time. Over the next three weeks, he has thrown for over 300 yards in two separate games and five touchdowns during this stretch. His confidence is growing every week and his outlook has positively shifted from both a fantasy football and NFL standpoint.
The Bears will now prepare to face off with the Jaguars. This matchup will be taking place at Tottenham Stadium in England, marking the second consecutive week a game will be taking place across the pond.
Caleb Williams Week 6 Fantasy Football Outlook
Looking at the season as a whole, Caleb Williams currently is averaging 15.6 fantasy points per game which ranks 19th based on DraftKings fantasy scoring. However, the week-to-week growth is worth noting.
Williams recorded 7.2 fantasy points in the opening week which ranked 31st. In Week 2 he produced 9.4 fantasy points which ranks 29th among quarterbacks. He exploded for 23.3 fantasy points in Week 3 which made him the ninth-best-performing quarterback. The USC product had just 11.5 fantasy points in Week 4, the 22nd-best production, and then had his best performance last week recording 26.6 fantasy points which is the fifth-best rate among quarterbacks.
The tangible steps forward in his play are clear. In his first 10 quarters of NFL football, Williams had a 57% completion percentage, 5.2 yards per pass attempt, zero touchdowns, three interceptions, and a 57.6 passer rating. Looking at the last 10 quarters of Williams’ play, he has completed 70.1% of his passes, tallied 7.9 yards per pass attempt, thrown for five touchdowns, and just one interception. He has produced a 109.8 passer rating across this stretch.
While the blitz looked to be his kryptonite through the start of the season, Williams has improved vastly in this area as well. Over the past two weeks, he has completed 17 of 19 pass attempts for 200 passing yards, a pair of touchdowns, and zero turnover-worthy plays when facing the blitz. In Weeks 1-4, Williams was also just 5-29 (17%) with three interceptions when throwing the ball at least 15 yards down the field. In Week 5 he was 4-4 for 108 passing yards with two touchdowns when throwing it more than 15 yards down the field.
Week 6 provides another great opportunity for Caleb Williams to continue his upward trajectory. He will be facing a Jaguars defense that currently ranks 30th in points allowed and 31st in yards allowed. They also are dead last in passing yards given up and have forced the second-fewest turnovers. Jacksonville has been unable to hold an opponent under 18 points this season and allowed 47 points to the Bills in Week 3.
It was a bit rockier of a transition than expected, but Caleb Williams has officially arrived in the NFL and fantasy football scene. The rookie was a trendy choice to serve as a starting fantasy quarterback entering the year. These expectations should now be resumed with Chicago figuring out some things with its offensive line to allow Williams to have time to produce.
Looking specifically at Week 6, Caleb Williams should crack the list of top-five starting fantasy football quarterbacks. The Bears offense is beginning to click and they will be facing off against one of the worst defenses in the NFL. Expect this to be his best performance of the season and for this to still be in the early point of his evolution. While there are exceptions if you have one of the top quarterbacks also on your team, if Caleb Williams is on your fantasy roster he should be playing this week.
