It’s been a miserable year for the Dolphins. A season that started with promise has sunk under a wave of injuries and regression. With quarterback Tua Tagovailoa ($6,300) out, football’s top passing game has been reduced to a shell of itself. As a result, target monsters like Tyreek Hill ($7,600) and Jaylen Waddle ($5,700) have become unreliable fantasy options.
Sunday’s game against the Patriots doesn’t look like a barnburner, with the over/under at 36.5 points. Miami, one-point favorites, will have to move the ball if it hopes to grab a road win. That’s a difficult proposition at the moment, as current starter Tyler ‘Snoop’ Huntley ($5,600) is averaging just under 150 passing yards per game over 10 career starts.
If the Fins can’t throw the ball, maybe they can lean on De’Von Achane ($7,200). The second-year speedster hit a road bump last Monday, rushing for just 15 yards on 10 carries against the Titans. Miami’s running back had a chance to turn in a decent fantasy output, but Tennessee’s defense stuffed him at the one-yard line.
Can managers pencil Achane into their lineups this week? It’s impossible to say with confidence, especially because the Pats are a solid run defense. According to NFL’s Next Gen Stats, New England is allowing 13 rush yards over expected, 12th-best in football. Given the one-dimensional nature of the Dolphins‘ offense, expect plenty of defenders crowding the line this week.
Still, we can’t ignore Achane’s position as lead back. With Raheem Mostert ($6,200) still limited at practice and rookie Jaylen Wright ($4,700) unproven, the competition for touches is limited. Huntley is typically a quick passer that works in the short field, so there should be plenty of receiving work out of the backfield. Achane is second on the team this season in targets with 22.
At this point in the year, with injuries stacking up, it’s hard to find a team that can afford to keep Achane on the bench. His role on offense is simply too large to ignore. In leagues of ten teams or more, he’s still startable as a flex.
