Through four games last season, Moore caught 19 of 24 targets for 301 yards and two touchdowns. Through four games this season, Moore has hauled in 22 of 34 targets for 189 yards and a touchdown.
There have been videos of Moore being frustrated, X posts about his route tree, the negative impact from offensive coordinator Shane Waldron and comments from Jaxon Smith-Njigba. These all have some validity.
That said, Moore is getting peppered with targets, having received the ninth-most in the league. Sure, nine have been behind the line of scrimmage, but volume is volume and a 25.6% target share is nothing to sneeze at.
The Bears have a new offensive coordinator and a new rookie quarterback operating behind a bad offensive line. There’s a chance that Shane Waldron figures things out, Caleb Williams develops over the course of the season and the offensive linemen become more of a cohesive unit. It’s only Week 5.
There is no guarantee that this optimistic path will play out. It’s well within the range of outcomes that this season becomes a dumpster fire, but the perception is so negative concerning the Bears offense that the price to acquire could be palatable.
The Bears play the Panthers, Jaguars, Commanders and Cardinals over the next four weeks. Those teams are fifth, ninth, third and first in passing success rate. Then the rest of the season, only the Vikings and 49ers have stout pass defenses, although, all could be mute if the offensive line cannot limit pressure.
Moore is such a talented player. He has good size at 6-feet, 210 pounds and runs the 40 in 4.42 seconds. He’s in the 93rd percentile for burst score and 76th in agility, with a 12.5% juke rate, good for 11th in the league.
Caleb Williams hasn’t looked great, but he is very talented as well, and I’ve actually been impressed with some of the things he’s done. He’s far from perfect, as he’s a rookie who’s constantly being pressured, but he’s going through reads and, at some point, the game could slow down for him.
When looking to acquire a player, acquisition cost is paramount. The current environment has likely depressed Moore’s value, making the risk/reward favorable.
