Editor’s Note: Colts RB Jonathan Taylor (ankle) has been ruled for Week 5 vs. the Jaguars.
Jonathan Taylor injured his ankle last week and will not practice Wednesday due to the injury, putting his status up in the air for Sunday’s matchup vs. the Jaguars.
There were rumblings about Taylor being placed on IR, so it feels more than likely that the back will miss at least Week 5. If that is the case, Trey Sermon ($5,700) will be the next man up for the Colts. With Taylor nursing the sprained ankle last Sunday vs. the Steelers, Sermon saw a season-high five carries. In fact, the 25-year-old has been the only other Colts’ back outside of Taylor to carry the ball through four games. Sermon will likely operate as Indianapolis’ primary rusher if Taylor is inactive, which as we saw last season with Zack Moss, is a terrific opportunity. In the five starts he made with Taylor out, Moss provided 15.4 FPTS per game.
Sermon isn’t the most efficient rusher — he is averaging 3.7 yards per carry over the last two seasons — and Jacksonville is giving up the fifth-fewest yards per rush this season (3.9), but his likely workload of about 15-20 touches is too much overlook if Taylor sits. Plus, this game’s total is the fifth-highest of Week 5 on the DraftKings Sportsbook at 46.5 points, so this contest should be a fantasy-friendly environment.
All in all, if Taylor misses this game, Sermon is a compelling FLEX play and needs to be started in most season long formats.
