After the biggest game of the college football season so far, there is a new team atop the power rankings. Here are my national power rankings heading into Week 6.
I will do a top-25 college football power rankings every week for the duration of the regular season. These power rankings will be based on where every team stands at the current moment, not a prediction of where these teams will be at the end of the season. The team’s ranking from the week prior will be in parenthesis next to their current ranking.
#1- Alabama (5)
Alabama won the biggest game of the college football season so far by taking down Georgia in an all-time classic. The Crimson Tide dominated the first half and then showed great resiliency to hang on and win in the end after a huge Georgia comeback. The game played out like a playoff game and the Tide won so they got the #1 spot in this week’s rankings.
#2- Texas (2)
Texas had an easy win to start SEC play but things get real after its bye week when it takes on Oklahoma.
#3- Ohio State (3)
Ohio State started its conference schedule with an easy win over Michigan State but its schedule toughens up as it faces Iowa this weekend.
#4- Tennessee (4)
Tennessee stays put after a bye week last week. However, it has a couple of intriguing SEC tests coming up against Arkansas and Florida.
#5- Penn State (8)
Penn State convincingly beat a ranked opponent, Illinois, and it deserves to move up this list. It is now inside the top five and at the moment seems like the second-best team in the Big Ten behind Ohio State.
#6- Miami (7)
Miami survived a thriller against Virginia Tech on Friday night to remain undefeated. This week it heads to Cal where College GameDay will be in town for an exciting game.
#7- Georgia (1)
Georgia lost to Alabama in an all-time classic game and it had to get dropped a few spots. However, if the Georgia team that played in the second half of that game shows up the rest of the season, it might not lose again.
#8- Oregon (9)
Oregon has yet to pick up a signature win or play someone who shows us how good it is. We will get that in two weeks when it takes on Ohio State.
#9- Missouri (14)
Missouri has its biggest game of the season so far as it takes on Texas A&M on the road this weekend. This is its chance to put a really big win on the board and prove it is a top-10 team.
#10- Clemson (15)
Clemson continues to blow teams out. After losing to Georgia 34-3 in its season opener, it has won every other game by at least 24 points. Despite how bad Florida State has been, that will be an interesting matchup for Clemson on Saturday.
#11- Iowa State (12)
Iowa State is flying under the radar better than any team in the country but it just keeps winning. This week it takes on Baylor in another tough conference test.
#12- Michigan (16)
Michigan went down to the wire against Minnesota and it still doesn’t seem like it could contend against the top teams in the country. However, if it keeps squeaking out wins, it will have a chance to make the College Football Playoff. The Wolverines have a really tough test traveling to Washington this week.
#13- USC (17)
USC took care of business against Wisconsin last week and has a tough matchup against Minnesota this week. USC still controls its destiny if it just keep winning games.
#14- Ole Miss (6)
Ole Miss suffered a brutal upset loss to Kentucky last week. It was the first conference opponent it faced all year and it wasn’t up to the task. Now, the Rebels face another tough SEC test on the road against South Carolina this week.
#15- BYU (23)
BYU has exceeded expectations to start the year and it has a bye week ahead before a huge matchup against Arizona in two weeks.
#16- LSU (18)
LSU has a bye week ahead before a massive game against Ole Miss. It needs to sort out its defense before it faces the Rebels, but it will have two weeks to prepare.
#17- Notre Dame (24)
Notre Dame picked up a solid win over Lousiville to keep its season alive. If it keeps winning, it can still get into the College Football Playoff, starting with Stanford this week.
#18- Boise State (19)
Boise State got a huge win over Washington State last week and it is starting to look like the real deal, led by RB Ashton Jeanty. It has a couple of easy Mountain West matchups ahead before its huge showdown with UNLV.
#19- Utah (10)
Utah lost a bad one to Arizona last week. With Cam Rising at quarterback, the Utes could still be the Big 12 champions but without him, their offense just doesn’t work. There is still no clear timeline of when he will come back.
#20- Indiana (22)
Indiana looks like the real deal after its big win over Maryland last week. The Hoosiers face a tough road test against Northwestern this week but their offense shows no signs of slowing down.
#21- Kansas State (NR)
Kansas State looked to have fallen off but it picked up a convincing win over Oklahoma State last week. It has a bye week this week ahead of a monster matchup against Colorado.
#22- Louisville (11)
Louisville took a close loss to Notre Dame on the road but it is still one of the top teams in the ACC. It has a chance to get back on track in a home game against SMU this week.
#23- Illinois (13)
Illinois lost its first game of the season to Penn State on Saturday. However, it still has a good team and after a bye week, it should get back to its winning ways against Purdue.
#24- UNLV (NR)
UNLV went through a lot of controversy surrounding its starting QB leaving the program. However, the team showed it was fully behind its new QB and thrashed Fresno State. It has a huge non-conference matchup against Syracuse this week.
#25- South Carolina (25)
South Carolina stays put at #25 after a bye week. This weekend it has a massive home game against Ole Miss where it has a chance to prove it is the real deal in the SEC this season.
