Carson Steele ($4,800) drew the start this past Sunday vs. the Chargers, but the rookie lost a fumble on his first carry of the game and then only saw one more carry for the rest of the contest. With Steele in the doghouse, Kareem Hunt ($5,500) operated as the Chiefs’ top back, rushing 14 times for 69 yards and catching two of his three targets for 16 yards, resulting in 10.5 FPTS. Despite it being his season debut, Hunt handled 66.7% of the running back carries for Kansas City — including one red zone rush — while playing 45.2% of the snaps. Additionally, Hunt ran a route on 32% of his team’s drop backs and he saw a target on 27% of those routes.
Producing 85 scrimmage yards on 16 touches versus a Los Angeles’ defense that is the fifth-highest graded defense on PFF is a solid season debut for Hunt, especially when you consider that the Chiefs came from behind to defeat the Chargers on the road.
Clyde Edwards-Helaire is set return off IR this week, but he will likely play a minimal role for the next few games. Hunt should be Kansas City’s primary rusher this coming Monday vs. the Saints and there is a strong chance the veteran maintains that role for the foreseeable future with Isiah Pacheco (leg) on IR.
New Orleans has given up the seventh-most yards per rush this season (4.8) and, with the Chiefs as five-point home favorites on the DraftKings Sportsbook for this tilt, Hunt brings compelling upside for Week 5 and needs to be pursued on the waiver wire if available in your leagues. If your league is a FAAB format, Hunt warrants around a 10-15% bid.
