Will Sam LaPorta have his fantasy breakout on Monday Night Football?

Updated:

By: Alex Hunter

LaPorta has been one of the biggest disappointments in fantasy football this season. The tight end was the top player taken at his position in most season-long leagues, but currently ranks 18th in FPTs per game among tight ends. Last season, he led the position in FPTs. This season, LaPorta hasn’t cracked 50 yards receiving in a game and he hasn’t found the endzone once.

The main problem has been LaPorta’s dramatic decline in usage. After finishing with a 21% target share and seeing 15 redzone targets last season, the tight ranks fifth for the Lions in target share at an underwhelming 9.7% and he has only seen on redzone target. Albeit a limited sample of only three games, this is an extremely concerning decline and to make matters worse, the Lions’ pass rate has slightly dipped since last season.

Now, for Detroit’s Week 4 matchup, they face the Seahawks on Monday Night Football, who have been an elite defensive group with new HC Mike McDonald. So far, Seattle is allowing the least yards per pass in the league by a decent margin. They are the top graded defense on PFF. This is a brutal spot for LaPorta, and to put more gas on the fire, the tight end may not be 100%, after spraining his ankle last week vs. the Cardinals.

LaPorta will find his groove at some point, but this not the spot for the 23-year-old to breakout and have a vintage performance.
