Roschon Johnson did not play in Week 1 due to an injury, then only played on special teams in Week 2. With D’Andre Swift carrying 24 times for 48 yards, Johnson was inserted into the lineup for Week 3โplaying 33% of the snapsโwhich resulted in eight carries for 30 yards. Then, prior to Week 4, the chatter was that Johnson would start receiving more work going forward.
Well, Johnson carried seven times for 26 yards and at touchdown.
Swift, received 16 carries, turning those into 93 yards and this 36-yard touchdown.
Per Next Gen Stats, Swift hit a top speed of 19.02 mph and rushed for 30 yards over expectations. The play had a 0.2% of turning into a touchdown.
Swift also ran 16 routes and hauled in all seven targets for 72 yards, with 70 of those YAC.
Swift has never been the most efficient runner, but has always been a factor in the passing game. In addition, the Bears targeted Swift early in the offseason and signed him to a three-year, $24 million contract with $15.4 million guaranteed.
Johnson could eventually be the guy, but Swift’s Week 4 lengthened the leash. Until Johnson out-snaps Swift, then he will be a complementary player and a thorn for Swift owners, which mitigates the notion of Johnson being the Bears best fantasy back. Volume matters.
