Knicks pass 76ers in title odds on DraftKings Sportsbook after Karl-Anthony Towns trade

The New York Knicks have sent shockwaves through the NBA just days before the start of training camp, acquiring All-Star center Karl-Anthony Towns from the Minnesota Timberwolves in a blockbuster trade. In exchange, the Knicks sent forward Julius Randle and guard Donte DiVincenzo to Minnesota, along with a 2025 first-round pick via Detroit. More moving parts involved before it’s finalized.

This move signifies the Knicks’ intent to take a serious step forward in their pursuit of an NBA championship, solving a major roster deficiency at center while sending their title odds on DraftKings Sportsbook past the Philadelphia 76ers.

Before the trade, New York was at +900 to win the title on DraftKings Sportsbook, but after adding Towns, those odds improved to +800, placing them third behind only the Boston Celtics (+310) and Oklahoma City Thunder (+700). This trade reshapes the Knicks’ lineup and puts them firmly in contention for the 2024-25 season.

Towns Solves Knicks’ Frontcourt Problem

For New York, this trade couldn’t have come at a better time. With starting center Mitchell Robinson expected to miss at least two months of the season due to ankle surgery, the acquisition of Towns fills a critical void. Towns’ offensive versatility will be an immediate boost, offering New York a rare combination of elite scoring, rebounding and outside shooting. He has averaged 22.9 points and 10.8 rebounds per game over his career while shooting nearly 40% from three-point range — a dynamic that will open up the floor for the Knicks.

The Brunson-Towns pick-and-roll will be difficult to stop, as both players can exploit mismatches and create scoring opportunities. Towns’ ability to stretch the defense and punish mismatches gives New York an offensive weapon it’s needed. He can play out of the roll and the pop while being available as a short-roll option when Jalen Brunson gets blitzed. His all-around skill set enhances much of what Julius Randle offered, as Towns is a more efficient shooter and scorer.

When Towns plays center, the Knicks can also utilize him at the top of the offense in Delay sets, given his talent as a passer. This setup leverages his shooting gravity to open up the floor for off-ball activity from wings like OG Anunoby and Mikal Bridges, which is a significant asset since neither player is necessarily a dynamic shot creator. New York will have more flow in its half-court offense, with various actions and counters that can be built into this approach.

If the Knicks decide to play more double-big combinations with Robinson next to Towns, there are many components from Minnesota’s system that New York can adopt. For instance, the Timberwolves often used double-drag screening actions with additional counters, such as flare screens, to put the defense in tough positions. The option of utilizing Horns sets, with a big on each elbow, also becomes a natural choice. Various play designs can help mitigate the offensive limitations Robinson poses, similar to how Towns played alongside Rudy Gobert in Minnesota.

However, there are natural limitations with Towns on the defensive end, as he is not an imposing rim protector and struggles when guarding in space. While Minnesota managed to have the best defense in the NBA with Towns in the lineup, it benefited from having four-time Defensive Player of the Year Gobert and Jaden McDaniels on the wing. For the Knicks, they will need Anunoby and Bridges to do everything they can defensively to cover for Towns and Brunson.

Knicks Pass 76ers in Title Odds

While the addition of Towns has propelled New York up the odds leaderboard, it has simultaneously caused the 76ers to fall behind. Philadelphia entered the offseason with strong hopes of contending behind former MVP Joel Embiid and an improved roster, but now find it has +900 odds, dropping to fourth place on DraftKings Sportsbook.

Despite a busy offseason where Philadelphia added stars like Paul George and veteran contributors like Andre Drummond, it now faces stiffer competition within its conference. Oddsmakers seemingly view the Knicks as having a stronger and more balanced roster following the acquisition of Towns.

The 76ers will still need good fortune regarding Embiid’s health and continued development from rising star Tyrese Maxey to stay in contention. However, that was the case regardless of whatever happened with the Knicks. The addition of Towns to a conference rival like New York raises the stakes even higher for the Sixers as they look to maintain their place among the NBA’s top title contenders.

Knicks Face Long-Term Questions, Immediate Opportunities

While Towns immediately solves New York’s short-term problem at center, there are long-term financial implications that the Knicks will need to navigate. Towns is currently in the first year of his four-year, $220 million supermax extension, which could push New York into the second apron of the NBA’s salary cap in the coming seasons.

If the Knicks remain above the apron for multiple years, they could face severe penalties, including the loss of future draft assets. Despite these concerns, New York seems willing to bet on its current core. With Towns joining Brunson, Anunoby and Bridges, the Knicks have a talented and versatile roster capable of challenging the top teams in the East. The question now is whether this group can mesh quickly enough to meet the lofty expectations that come with such a significant trade.

In the short term, New York has every reason to be optimistic. The trade for Towns is a clear signal that the Knicks are pushing to contend for a title now, and their improved odds on DraftKings Sportsbook reflect a growing belief that they could make a deep playoff run. New York is now -180 to finish with a top-three seed in the East and is favored to finish with over 54.5 wins at -110 odds.

As the season approaches, New York’s championship window appears more open than it has been in years, with Towns poised to play a central role in its quest for a long-awaited NBA title.
