DraftKings Sportsbook sets Nuggets win total at 51.5: Can Jokic and Denver surpass expectations?

The Denver Nuggets, fresh off a 57-win season and a third MVP award for Nikola Jokic, are looking to maintain their place among the NBA’s elite. After falling short in the Western Conference semifinals, the Nuggets have a projected win total of 51.5 on DraftKings Sportsbook, with odds of -105 for the over and -115 for the under.

With key roster changes and the health of Jamal Murray being major factors, the Nuggets will look to hit the over and remain a top contender in the West to ensure they hold homecourt advantage in the postseason.

Denver saw key departures in the offseason, most notably guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, who signed with the Orlando Magic, and Reggie Jackson, who left for the Philadelphia 76ers. These losses exposed the team’s depth issues, which were a significant factor in their postseason exit. Part of the Nuggets’ calculus is the trust they hold in Christian Braun and Julian Strawther to develop further and fill these voids.

The Nuggets also signed Russell Westbrook to a two-year, $6.8 million deal. The former MVP brings leadership and playmaking ability to the second unit. “My job is to push Jamal [Murray] to be the best he can be,” Westbrook said during media day.

Denver also added forward Dario Saric, who provides a versatile skill set in the frontcourt, particularly with first-round pick DaRon Holmes II out for the season due to an Achilles injury.

Denver remains a strong title contender with +950 odds to win the championship on DraftKings Sportsbook, ranking fifth in the NBA. If their new acquisitions can provide valuable minutes off the bench, Denver could make another deep playoff run.

Murray’s Health is Key to Nuggets’ Success

Jamal Murray’s performance will be a key determinant in whether the Nuggets can hit the over on their 51.5-win projection. Last season, Murray’s play was inconsistent down the stretch, with fluctuating performances in the final months and through the playoffs. Despite his struggles, Murray refused to blame injuries for his inefficiency, even though Nuggets president Josh Kroenke acknowledged that Murray played through “some pretty good dings” that might have sidelined other players.

Heading into training camp, Murray confidently put any lingering health concerns to rest. “No,” Murray said when asked if he had any health limitations entering the season. “I feel good.”

Murray’s recent four-year, $208.5 million contract extension solidifies his future with the Nuggets, and his presence is key to the team’s ability to surpass the 51.5-win mark. The Nuggets are also favored at -135 to finish as a top-three seed in the Western Conference, according to DraftKings Sportsbook, while the odds for under 3.5 seeding sit at +110.

Jokic’s Impact and MVP Odds

While Murray’s health and consistency are important, Denver’s championship hopes remain tied to Nikola Jokic, who is favored to win his fourth MVP award at +350 on DraftKings Sportsbook. Jokic’s ability to elevate his teammates and dominate both ends of the floor has made the Nuggets perennial contenders. Last season, Jokic averaged 24.5 points, 11.8 rebounds, and 9.8 assists, leading the team through the regular season and into the playoffs.

Jokic’s durability has been a critical asset for the Nuggets, as he’s remained relatively injury-free throughout his career. As long as Jokic continues to perform at an MVP level, Denver will have a strong chance to not only surpass their win total but also contend for another deep playoff run.

Can Denver Hit the Over on 51.5 Wins?

Denver’s over/under win total of 51.5 reflects a slight drop from last season’s 57 wins, largely due to depth concerns and the increased competition in the Western Conference. Adding Westbrook and Saric provides veteran experience, but much will depend on how well players like Braun and Strawther perform in expanded roles.

The Nuggets will look to build off their strong 2023-24 season with Jokic continuing to dominate, Murray returning to form, and Westbrook’s leadership off the bench. If the team can stay healthy and develop its young players, surpassing the 51.5-win mark is within reach.

However, in a competitive conference where every game counts, hitting the over will require a full-team effort. As Booth pointed out, “In order to be great, you have to develop and win. That’s our obligation.”
