Justin Herbert Live Injury Updates

By: Dan Johnson

Update: 9/23 11:36 a.m. ET – According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Justin Herbert underwent X-Rays on his aggravated high ankle sprain following yesterday’s game. The results came back negative.

This, of course, is a bit of a non-update; he sounds more week-to-week than day-to-day. All that’s left to do for Herbert fans and fantasy managers is to wait until official practice reports roll out later this week.

Update: 4:36 p.m. ET – Herbert was wearing a walking boot after the game. In his postseason press conference, he said his ankle was “a little sore.” He said that he tried to return but realized that “Taylor gave us a better shot.” His status will be extremely important to monitor heading into the Chargers’ Week 4 home game vs. the Chiefs.

Update: 4:16p.m. – In his postgame press conference with the media, Jim Harbaugh expressed that the team removed Herbert from the game as a measure of abundant caution.

Ruiz, a reported for NFL Network, also noted that Harbaugh ultimately had to make the call to pull Justin Herbert. Herbert’s inclination, said Harbaugh, was to go back in and play.

This isn’t something any of us want to leave up to coach-speak. Especially with all that blown smoke about toughness. Herbert’s high ankle sprain is legitimate enough that he’s a risk to be removed from games.

This makes him, going forward, a risky option for season-long fantasy, DFS, and player prop bets. DraftKings Network will cover Herbert’s practice participation throughout the week.

UPDATE 3:12p.m. – Per the Los Angeles Chargers’ X account, Justin Herbert is officially questionable to return with an ankle injury.

Taylor Heinicke remains in at quarterback.

In the third quarter of Sunday’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Justin Herbert appeared to aggravate the same high ankle sprain that kept him limited in practice all week.

Herbert was taking a snap under center when he was swarmed by Steelers defenders and tackled awkwardly. He stayed in the game for one more play, during which he handed the ball off. Then Herbert left the game, and fell to the ground on the sideline while trainers surrounded him.

Backup QB Taylor Heinicke immediately relieved Herbert, and took the next snap before the Chargers punted.

We’ll provide further updates on Herbert’s injury here.
