Shohei Ohtani rewrote the history books last night as the Dodgers put a 20-4 shellacking on the Miami Marlins.
On Friday’s Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz, the crew recaps Shohei Ohtani’s remarkable performance against the Marlins. Ohtani went 6-for-6 with three home runs, two stolen bases, and 10 RBIs. Billy Gil was in attendance at LoanDepot Park to watch all the action and gave the crew an account of what he witnessed. Before he could give his account, Dan playfully acknowledged how not only did Ohtani make history with his numbers, but a large crowd was in the stands In Miami when attendance for Marlins’ games is typically low. Luckily for Billy, his seats were right along the first baseline, giving him a perfect view to watch history be made.
Billy told Dan that the game was INSANE, while Dan added that it can be argued that Billy paid $27 to watch the single greatest game an individual has played in our lifetime. Chris Cote did not want to be “that” guy, but he had to mention that Ohtani’s third home run was against a middle infielder. Billy confirmed that the home run was hit far, and the initial distance recorded on the homer of 440 was essentially BS.
Further, Billy brought up the following stat: Since RBI became an official metric in baseball in the 1920s, only one MLB player has had a game with 10-plus RBI, six-plus hits, five-plus extra-base hits, three-plus home runs and a game with two stolen bases and that player is Shohei Ohtani. How impressive is it that he did it in one game whereas it would take some players a career to accomplish anything remotely to those stats. Billy also shouted out that Ohtani had 10 RBIs as a lead-off hitter to make his point. As a lead-off hitter, there is no one to drive in; Ohtani hit the 10 RBI mark through at-bats 2-6. Normally, one does not get six at-bats in game, but as Dan points out, Ohtani got six at-bats because the opposing team could get him out.
Unfortunately, even amongst all this celebration, Dan brings up the strong point that the sports debate culture and even the internet have made it corrosive to celebrate greatness, marking this as an era where we witness undisputed athletic mastery.
The Dodgers have secured their 12th straight playoff birth and Ohtani is primed to lead this Dodgers team through the playoffs. The Los Angeles Dodgers are the favorites to win the World Series at +330 odds at DraftKings Sportsbook.
