Carson Steele ($6,400)
Before he was known for his peculiar idea of a pet, Carson Steele was tearing it up at Ball State and UCLA. Despite his long blonde locks and charming smile, the 21-year-old is a physical freak. He squatted over 600 pounds as a freshman and hit 28 reps of 225 pounds on his pro day. At his stops in Muncie, Indiana, and Los Angeles, he was a workhorse back who showed he had the stamina to handle being the feature part of an offense.
Steele’s jacked physique doesn’t translate to his footspeed, as his 4.77 40 is likely the catalyst for his name not getting called in April. Despite being an undrafted free agent, he showed enough in training camp to make the roster and serve as the team’s backup ball carrier. He’s struggled in early action, but it’s hard to make an accurate evaluation with such a limited sample size.
Andy Reid will give the rookie the rock, and starting in a backfield alongside Patrick Mahomes warrants a DFS contribution. His stature makes him a red-zone bully, and his scoring potential is enticing if he can survive on early downs.
Darnell Mooney ($6,200)
If you’re a frequent reader of this series, you have excellent taste and might remember I picked Darnell Mooney as my favorite value play on Monday Night Football. The speedster wideout balled out on primetime, catching a trio of passes for 88 yards and a touchdown. It was his best game in years, as he showed a newfound rapport with quarterback Kirk Cousins ($9,000).
The expected volume has me returning for more, as his eight targets lead all Falcons‘ pass catchers. He had a few miscues that affected his bottom line, but the signs of a bounceback campaign were prevalent. The rejuvenated Kansas City secondary has had a shaky start and has gotten some breaks, thanks to the vaunted pass rush. Mooney is a game-breaker, and it seems like there’s an effort to get him the rock. Until the value matches the upside, he’s a no-brainer option.
Younghoe Koo ($4,800)
Offensive production across the league has been relatively abysmal, which has opened the door for the kicker renaissance. The seemingly easiest position in the sport has been routinely ridiculed by angry fans, wondering how the group doesn’t perform their only job at a more efficient clip. All of a sudden, kickers are heroes, burying game-winning field goals left and right and becoming DFS weapons.
50 is the new 30, as kicks from midfield and beyond converted at nearly 90% in the first two weeks. Koo has been perfect this season on a few attempts and is due for an increased workload as the offense continues to gel. The former NFL points leader is clinical late in games, and his DFS outlook is more favorable than a WR4 or RB2.
