With Isiah Pacheco (leg) on IR, Perine should see more work going forward, but it feels unlikely that the veteran will see enough work to make him a viable starter for your fantasy lineups. After Pacheco got injured last week vs. the Bengals, Carson Steele operated as the Chiefs’ top back, with seven carries – two of which came in the red zone – in 12 snaps, while Perine didn’t record a rush and saw one target in his nine snaps of work.
Clearly, Perine is behind Steele in Kansas City’s running back order. To make matters worse for Perine, the Chiefs signed old friend Kareem Hunt this week to add more depth to this backfield that is expected to be without Pacheco for six to eight weeks.
Hunt is coming off a season in which he averaged a career-worst 3.0 yards per carry with the Browns, but Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs have been expressing their excitement about Hunt’s return to the media this week, and it’s hard to imagine he doesn’t play a larger role than Perine.
The 29-year-old will likely be the third option in this backfield, and unless you are playing in a very deep season-long league, benching Perine is a smart move for Week 3.
