SEPTEMBER 30: Adam Schefter reported on Monday Night Countdown that Tagovailoa could return in Week 8. He is symptom-free and there’s been no indication that anyone is dissuading him from continuing to play football.
The Dolphins are currently 1-2. After Monday night’s game against the Titans, Miami travels to New Englad, have their bye in Week 6, then travel to Indianapolis. Week 8 is a home game against the Arizona Cardinals.
Tua Tagovailoa suffered a scary concussion in last Thursday’s loss to the Bills and the NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo is now reporting that the Dolphins are placing Tagovailoa on injured reserve. Tagovailoa will now miss a minimum of four games. Garfolo noted that Tagovailoa will meet with outside neurologists about this concussion, which is the third officially recorded concussion the quarterback has suffered since joining the NFL in 2020.
While this is very concerning for Tagovailoa’s wellbeing and future, reports came out this past Sunday that the quarterback has no plans of retiring. After leading the NFL in passing yards a year ago, Tagovailoa inked a four-year, $212.4 million extension with the Dolphins this past summer.
That being said, after meeting with neurologists over the next month, Tagovailoa very well could end changing his mind. Time will tell, but with the quarterback sidelined, Miami is expected to start Skylar Thompson under center. The 27-year-old hasn’t started a game since 2022 and Thompson didn’t look overly promising while logging 28% of the snaps for the Dolphins last Thursday, completing eight of his 14 attempts for 80 yards and no touchdowns.
Going from Tagovailoa to Thompson hurts the fantasy appeal of both Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, and it hurts Miami’s offense as a whole going forward. With Thompson under center for Week 3, the Dolphins are 4.5-point underdogs vs. the Seahawks on the DraftKings Sportsbook.
