Keegan-Michael Key shares his thought process when it comes to sketch comedy

Published:

By: Darian Kelly

On the latest episode of The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz, comedian Keegan-Michael Key gives the crew insight into creating a sketch.

Key and Jordan Peele authored many memorable sketches over the years on their legendary program, Key and Peele. One of Key’s most notable sketches is his substitute teacher sketch, in which he plays Mr. Garvey, a black substitute teacher from the inner city who takes over a predominantly white suburban high school class. The power struggle from the first roll call, where he mispronounced the students’ names, to the back-and-forth corrections and eventual outburst, gave us many quotables. He shared with Le Batard that he had been doing sketch comedy for 12 straight years before that famous substitute teacher sketch. He said he made it a point that when it came to playing Mr. Garvey, his approach was to play the character seriously, expressing that the characters in the sketches don’t know they are in a comedy.

Key and Peele have left us all in stitches laughing at how their comedic sketches always hint at the humor behind the reality of specific cultural dynamics, particularly how different cultures greet each other. Le Batard pulls up a side-by-side of Peele, playing former President Obama, and a recent video of the real Obama greeting each NBA player at this past summer’s USA Basketball 50th anniversary event.

Obama daps up the NBA players differently and proceeds to shake hands with the coaches. From Key’s account, the former president tries to make everyone culturally comfortable, essentially physically code-switching in real-time. What is hilarious about the video is that President Obama gives Coach Steve Kerr a handshake and a hug. Key added jokingly that he loves how Kerr is more black-adjacent than all the other coaches there.

Sometimes life really does imitate art, it seems.
