Cleveland Guardians vs. Tampa Bay Rays

The Pick: Guardians Moneyline (-130)

The Hawaiian began his pro career at 17 in 2017. He made his Major League debut in late July 2024. Cantillo spent years in the Padres’ system before coming to Cleveland via the Mike Clevinger trade. The Guardians liked what they saw. They like what they see. Cantillo is rough around the edges. Walks and control were an issue in MILB and they’ve been an issue in Cantillo’s six MLB starts. That comes with elite stuff.

The transition to the big leagues is tough on the best prospects. Cantillo’s introduction to MLB hitters has been a trial by fire. He debuted against the Phillies. That start was followed by matchups with nothing but playoff contenders — Orioles, Twins, Yankees and Royals. He was granted a reprieve in his last start. Cantillo struck out 10 weak-hitting White Sox across seven innings. He allowed two hits and surrendered a single walk (1.18 xFIP). Tampa Bay can plate runs against left-handed pitching (109 wRC+) but they strike out a lot (24.6% K-Rate).

Washington Nationals vs. Miami Marlins

The Pick: Nationals Moneyline (-148)

It’s never safe picking or picking on Patrick Corbin. In years past, Corbin has been one of the worst regular starting pitchers in baseball. He’s not suddenly better or worse. He’s Patrick Corbin. His volatility keeps Corbin on the board by inflating his odds. Profitability is possible. His record (5-13) and ERA (5.60) are eye sores. His actual games are not bad on the eyes. Corbin has struggled with consistency and luck in past seasons. He’s decent and unlucky this year (47% Grand Ball Rate with a .340 BABIP and 66.3% Stand Rate). Friday the 13th has passed. Patrick could find a four-leaf clover.

Home runs ruined his last start (six innings and seven runs against the Pirates). His previous four starts were different stories — four total runs and 24 strikeouts. One of those starts was against Miami — 5.2 innings, two earned runs and eight strikeouts. The Marlins are the second-worst team in MLB vs. left-handed pitching (23% K-Rate, .120 ISO, .278 wOBA and 74 wRC+). Corbin doesn’t need luck on Saturday.

Los Angeles Dodgers at Atlanta Braves

The Pick: Dodgers Moneyline (+110)

There’s a flare in Jack Flaherty this season. Detroit has been a city of rebirth. Flaherty came into his own in his half-season in Hitsville, USA. He took his show on the road in August after being traded to the World Series contenders. The groove hasn’t been so smooth as he’s transitioned to the L.A. Scene. That changed in his last start against the Guardians — 7.1 scoreless innings, four hits and six strikeouts.

Most of Flaherty’s starts for the Dodgers have been great — 5-1 with a 2.61 ERA (3.38 xFIP). Those numbers are great but could be better. Flaherty has allowed two home runs in three of those starts (Pirates, Brewers and Orioles). Mistake pitches ruined flawless performances (10.2 K/9 and 88.7% Strand Rate). The Braves are ice cold (76 wRC+ over the last week) and struggle with right-handed pitching — 24% K-Rate, .163 ISO, .304 wOBA and 93 wRC+.
