College GameDay came to town for a huge SEC matchup. The Gamecocks had a strong start to the season with a big conference road win against Kentucky. Meanwhile, LSU took a tough opening week loss to USC. Both teams were desperate for a win in this game to keep their SEC and College Football Playoff hopes alive.
The Gamecocks started strong with the home crowd at their back and jumped out to an early lead. Then thanks to some “Beamer Ball,” South Carolina took control of the game with a blocked punt that led to an easy Raheim Sanders touchdown to extend the lead to 17-0.
LSU bounced back in the second quarter with a sustained touchdown drive to make the game 17-7. It followed that drive up with a key takeaway and the LSU offense kept rolling to bring the game to 24-16 at halftime.
South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers got hurt just before the half and was hobbled in the third quarter before being permanently replaced by backup QB Robby Ashford for the rest of the game. The South Carolina offense struggled to get anything going with Ashford in the second half and was overpowered by the Tigers in the third quarter.
The two teams went back and forth in the fourth quarter and the Tigers scored with under two minutes to play to take a 36-33 lead. The Gamecocks moved the ball down the field on their final drive and had a 49-yard field goal attempt to send the game to overtime. The field goal missed just wide left and LSU got the victory. The Tigers saved their season with their first SEC victory of the year and maintained their College Football Playoff aspirations. LSU’s odds remain at 40/1 to win the National Championship after the close win over South Carolina.
